I'm basing this on absolutely nothing, but I promise you no one will care.stannis wrote:I bought a black leather briefcase/shoulder bag.BourneAgain wrote:Have we discussed bags for men? Am I going to be carrying any documents, a laptop, or etc.?
Better to use with the strap as a shoulder bag or without as a briefcase?
Fwiw, I picked up a black Filson 256 (heavy canvas, still classy). Planning to rock the shoulder strap.

Do we actually need to bring a bag? Especially on the first day? I can't imagine firms start handing out laptops on the first day of orientation. If any prior summers are around, I'd appreciate the norm rather than speculation

Well you need something to carry your backup tie, cuff links, padfolio, set of montblanc pens, suit brush, and grooming products (for midday touch ups). We're not animals, after all.monsterman wrote:Do we actually need to bring a bag? Especially on the first day? I can't imagine firms start handing out laptops on the first day of orientation. I was with you until the 'set' of montblanc pens. Should I claim the same number of state allowances as federal? Assuming I use the IRS calculator and take that amount of federal allowances.

I'm guessing they'll probably give you a bag (YMMV) and I'm guessing you'll probably never have to take the computer home anyway (YMMV). I'm guessing you'll also be like every other SA who has ever SAed and feel weird about rolling in at 9:47 every morning so you'll probably have a bag with you (YMMV). And I'm guessing you'll buy a bag because you won't want to be rolling in with that bag that they gave you (YMMV).monsterman wrote:Do we actually need to bring a bag? Especially on the first day? The above mostly applied to me but YMMV.

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
I heard nothing from my firm after I accepted the offer until they sent a questionnaire and the list of Summer Associates about a month ago. Got an email this week that they were sending something to my address so hopefully that'll have more info. I know from the previous email that there's a dinner on the 22nd and I start on the 23rd. I know nothing more than that.de minimis wrote:I start the 23rd, so hopefully I head something by the end of next week. Good to know I'm not alone! Haven't heard anything specific about onboarding, just a trickle of updates over the last few weeks and some initial contact from my associate mentor. If I don't hear more, I'll just show up on day one at 8:30 in a suit, playing it safe all around. Considering how formal these programs are I'm sure I'll hear much more in the next two weeks.

You should probably delete this. I think you meant to be anon.stretchedtoothin wrote:You need to be in a suit on your first day.Glasseyes wrote:Haven't heard anything specific about onboarding, just a trickle of updates over the last few weeks and some initial contact from my associate mentor. Has anyone else put any thought into what kind of clothes to wear to work? This is hard stuff!
Even more importantly, what kinds of office snacks are the most prestigious? Gotta be unsalted almonds washed down with perrier ya (but keep some handi-snax cheese spread + sticks waterproofed and taped under the tank lid of your favorite toilet for emergency degen feasts in case you mess up your comma usage)?

We covered this - track suits and sneakers. Gold chains and ostentatious gold watch if you're really feeling fancy.georgej wrote:Has anyone else put any thought into what kind of clothes to wear to work?
