Gibson DC told me that they DC office was filled and would not hire 1Ls. However, their other offices may hire 1Ls.

Are interviews for these positions tough to get? I am just starting to get responses and I don't know how to gauge my chances.

About 45 applications for me.
35 submitted Dec. 1, another 10 within a few days after. All big/midsize firms (IP boutique or general practice firms with strong IP groups). 4 interviews, a few are interested but want my transcript before proceeding, a couple called me to inform me they're not taking 1Ls but wanted to chat about my background and the possibility of working there next summer, then a couple dings, ~10 firms not taking 1Ls, and I'm still waiting on about half of the remaining applications.

Not really interested in NYC at all, is it still TCR to apply to NY BigLaw, at least for firms that don't have/take DC 1Ls?

Does anyone know what kind of work a legal internship at the Met Museum of Art in NYC entails? I would think copyright, mostly, but I need a better idea of what to write about for my cover letter.

Where do people hear these things? If Cooley has already sent out rejections and is actively interviewing people (in 2 days before a 2 day break, just following pretty much a 5 day weekend?), does that mean sending an app between now and its Jan 5 deadline is an auto-reject?

No, I haven't even received an email confirmation that they received my application.
Oh ok well since it's you that makes me feel better. I'm guessing these places are just waiting until the deadlines, which makes sense.
Cleary's deadline is Dec 30. In my school's job database, other firms say "accepting applications until [date]." But Cleary doesn't say anything a deadline in the body description, just in the header. However, I noticed that my school's job database doesn't have an "Apply" Button for Cleary. Not sure if this means I missed the deadline or it never had an "Apply" Button.

1. When you guys applied to Cleary, was it email only, or did you apply via your school's database? I know that it doesn't really matter for Cleary since they only take 1 1L but I just want to know to get my deadlines straight for upcoming deadlines.

2. If a job appears in your school's database and has an "Apply" Button, do you apply via that AND independent email?

Or is that redundant?

I heard back yesterday from a magistrate judge in flyover (in the small-ish market I want to practice). Likes the resume, wants to meet. Apparently, the few magistrate judges in this district take on one extern as a group (or that's how I read the email). I'm excited, and it'd be nice to have the summer sorted in early Jan. Hopefully it pans out.

For those applying to in-house too: How are you going about this? Are you targeting industries that you already have credible experience in, or are you going down F500 and will take any private sector, paying job you can get?

Also, if anyone is on substantial need-aid here (I guess this is only handful of schools): I know in-house pays less than 3K a week (that's for NYC/DC scale firms; secondary markets may vary), but if need-based aid in excess of cost of living reduces your need-based aid dollar-for-dollar and all I want is some disposable cash, then financially speaking I should be indifferent between any 2 paying jobs that both exceed cost-of-living, right?

30K post-tax is 20K let's say (or it could be less if it's an 8-week 1LSA instead of 10weeks). If I currently get 20K in need-aid and that need-aid gets reduced dollar for dollar after ~8K, then a firm summer should be no more financially rewarding than an in-house job that only pays 15K or 20K gross, right?

I would actually like to work in-house in a few industries but I have no prior exposure other than "I know the Dallas Cowboys inside out" or "I love your TV network/studio's productions" for sports and entertainment. But beyond that I'm at a loss because I'd have literally nothing to demonstrate an interest in an industry or company other than words.

Re Cooley, is each office designated x number of diversity fellows, or is it more of a free for all? The app gives the option to apply to each office (of which there are eight), which is strange if they only take six total fellows.

The app only allows you to apply to two

Yeah, I meant that there are eight available offices to apply to. Six spots.
