Why isn't Wachtell on the list?http://abovethelaw.com/2016/06/profits- ... ssociates/
Another post likely jacked from this thread. But actually a good post for once so I'll give them a pass.

I think when you have a history of paying top dollar to your associates above and beyond all other firms and tend to be quiet about compensation, you get a pass for a little while when you haven't immediately shouted from the rooftops that you'll be raising salaries.nahumya wrote:Why isn't Wachtell on the list?http://abovethelaw.com/2016/06/profits- ... ssociates/

Yah, I mean if Wachtell was gonna pull a Skadden, each associate would receive their own gold plated cheese plate that of course they would keep.

Sure, but their base compensation is the same, and we're making lists over here.

Covington may now rejoin the ranks of respectable elite law firms.. but CovingTTTTon lives forever in this thread.

Honestly I think Covington handled it a lot better than many other firms the past week. They said they would monitor it and they did. Even if it was a bit dickish/tone-deaf, maybe it was reasonable to say NY is a different market. And they were at least transparent. Then finally they matched when it was apparent the market was set. It's been fun though.

The issue was that it was stupid by CovingTTTon. Anyone that knew anything knew that all major markets were going to have to match.

Looks like covingTTTon summers still underpaid by $35 per week compared to others paying 3,500 a week.

What Covington did wasn't per se unreasonable, the idea that they would wait for peers to move before moving is functionally what 90% of the list did - they all just have different firms they consider peers.
The objectionable part was trying to coerce their self-defined market into not moving at all. If they'd have issued a "we are aware of changing associate compensation, we will observe the market and make a decision soon" it would barely have registered here. Just a terrible PR move overall.

SKADDEN ALPHA summers showing up to weekend cookouts with 30 racks of HEINEKEN meanwhile CovingTTTon summers getting the STINK FACE when they bring Miller Light.

Yup, a lot of firms did just that - basically signaling to associates that they were aware and they were waiting. Which is fine. I can't think of any other supposedly "prestigious" firm that went out of their way to tell their associates IN THEIR HOME OFFICE they weren't worth what the market in NYC is paying. That's just bush league.2014 wrote:What Covington did wasn't per se unreasonable, the idea that they would wait for peers to move before moving is functionally what 90% of the list did - they all just have different firms they consider peers.

Thoughts on whether Alston & Bird might match, or at least bump associates' salaries?
