Has anyone ITT approved of a shoe anyone posted in the last ~10 pages? I don't think so. Sure, I was exaggerating a bit, but the attitude ITT is a bit absurd. It doesn't matter what shoe someone posts, if its not Park Ave's, people find faults with it.

Right, because your interviewer is going to sit down and say "Man, those shoes suck!"

It creates a negative first impression. While that can be overcome, it would be better to just not put yourself in that position in the first place.

I'm not taking about how this affects you in an interview. I'm talking about your look generally. If you went out and got a BB suit, I'm assuming you care about how you present yourself in that suit, and I imagine you spent a pretty good chunk of change for it. If you had bought a $200 suit at Macy's, I wouldn't even bother bringing this point up. But if you're going to rock a nice suit and (I assume) a sharp shirt and tie with it, you are wasting your time if you wear crappy shoes.

i'm not gonna speak for anyone else but if it's faults with the black PA you want, i'm happy to go there. ae's captoe proportion is just blatantly wrong for certain sized feet. having a captoe in the first place is technically less formal than a plain toe balmoral, which has the bonus of letting you apply a high shine and wear with eveningwear without having to invest in anything patent, ever. there are build imperfections in the pa that leave some of them with nasty bowing issues around the ankle.

but nobody will ever hold any of these things against you when they see you in them, even if they would criticize those things when you went to buy them. that is what sets black pa's apart from other options, like corrected grain leather shoes or heavily brogued shoes, and that's why black pa's are and always should be the recommended option...even from people who choose not to wear black captoes to interviews, like me.

does brooks brothers or any chain store do good alterations even if you didnt buy the suit from there? Meaning can I go to BB to get a non-BB suit altered?

Just looking around for quality tailors and its just a bunch of small tailors and so im unsure of their quality...would prefer just going to some reputable national chain to get tailoring done. Any suggestions?

In my experience, the best tailors aren't at the big chains. I go to a small little Italian guy who retired but still does a bit of work out of his house.

op here, ok maybe you guys can help me out i just need to do this one alteration and not sure how to approach it.

Basically i have a slim fit suit but the suit pants' opening is much wider than my ankles...meaning though my pants fit well near my hip and quads, it gets progressively less "slim fit" as you go down my leg until you get to the opening and the openings are just too wide...how should i/they approach this alteration...like i dont even know what its called...

Ditto - I go to an old Korean guy that will do anything from sewing on a button to building a suit from whole cloth.

This is why I didn't buy a pair many years ago.

It does amuse me that I can get two pair of my shoes that look every bit as good as the PA for less than a pair of on-sale PA. It's not that I have anything against $250+ shoes -- I have ventured north of that line numerous times in life -- just not for my cap toe dress shoes because I never needed to. The idea that there's only one company out there making proper dress shoes for anything under $300, or that AE can do it for $200, but anything less than that is obviously crap is absurd.

Ask them to taper the legs. They'll know what to do.

That's the proper phrasing and if it can't be done well you've got the wrong tailor.

1) I'm ashamed by my lack of knowledge of menswear

2) Some friends at school know my screenname and use my posts against me..even innocuous posts like asking tailoring info.

I wouldn't even begin to know this. That's the tailor's bailiwick.

The Park Aves are just a good example of the right look and are a good value at the Nordstrom sale. I and others have recommended cheap alternatives (like the Bostonians) countless times ITT. And in the past ten pages I have given the thumbs up to non Park Aves at least twice. You're both just blatantly misrepresenting what goes on ITT.

Just give them a nice shine. If they're patent leather I would go easy. If they're a nice calfskin you can give them a good shine all over. No need to go nuts but no need to be timid.

I just shined my Park Aves and Strands on Sunday and it took all of 20 minutes per pair for what I'd think is considered the full routine. I didn't realize how scuffed they'd gotten in a month of basically alternating wear, but I'm really pleased with how they turned out.

It's good to do it regularly and to use a moisturizing cream. Shouldn't take long once you get it down. I also find that edge dressing helps a lot.

I got a Bespoke Post box a couple months ago that had a nice polishing brush, moisturizing cream, brown and black colored polish, wax, and a shammy. It's a pretty nice kit.
