It's for a firm I'm really interested in and that preselected me, but the invitation got caught in my spam folder. My fault for not checking.

Depends on the event. If it's just a cocktail stand and chat thing (which is the only one I know of tonight), just going should be fine. You might not have a name tag, but whatever.

The real evaluation is your interview - the receptions are only likely to make a difference in extreme cases. Really firms do it to try and impress you and be friendly.

(Source: am an attorney that will be at such an event tonight... trying to impress you and be friendly... while not evaluating you (and not being asked to evaluate you))

Has anyone had an interview that requested a writing sample, specifically? If so, how was it used in the interview? I have a screener tomorrow with one and I'm wondering how in-depth i'll have to go.

No one will know for sure, but generally the interviewer will call you back. If New York only had 1 interviewer then they're probably all in one day. If it's different rooms, it's possible that one interviewer wanted to get it done with, and another will do it tomorrow.

I think in years past it was not a lock that if you got an invite/went you got a CB, but somebody should correct me if I'm wrong.
