Yes you should include a cover letter. I think either attaching it or making it the body of the email is acceptable, but I lean towards the latter.

How much "targeting" do you do in your cover letters? Ie mentioning specifics about what you like about the firm

If you haven't started mass mailing yet, now is the time to start. My firm is already looking at resumes.

Others have said to wait for bidlist results because it's obnoxious to mail firms we're going to see at OCI. Your take on that? Should we mail all the firms we bid low / didn't bid on?

When mass mailing firms, and they have separate locations in big cities, should you just mass mail one location or each one you're interested it?

Depends how many HR contacts there are. If a different one is listed for each city, I would send an app to each. If there's a central person, that's obviously unnecessary. Just indicate in your cover letter which locations you're applying for.

As much as you can do while churning out a huge number of them. The trick is to make the reader think they're individually tailored, but the name of the game is "mass mail", not "individual mail"

Thanks for this, does this also apply to firms that are coming to OCI, but have a separate recruiting people for different offices that aren't at OCI?

I'm a bit wary of doing this for St. Louis firms (or other highly insular markets) because if they get wind that you're applying to other offices they might think you don't really want St. Louis. Maybe that's me being overly paranoid, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if that happened. I don't worry about it for major markets though.

Also, if you're sending a mass-mail to one recruiter saying that you're interested in multiple offices, I think the offices you're applying for should make sense. If you send one saying Dallas, Houston, and Austin, then yeah that makes sense: you want Texas. But it might look a little weird if you send one that says you're interested in NYC, Memphis, and Tampa.

For mass mailing, what are the thoughts on waiting until we find out the results of the writing competition? I'm sure some of us have resumes and cover letters all made up, but don't want to hit the send button on the mass mailing until we find out if we made a journal or law review. Should we wait or should we just start the mailing?

I agree. Hold off if you will know in time to get them out next week. Otherwise, it's a good excuse to follow up in a few weeks.

I'm below median at a T14. I started mass mailing firms in a secondary market yesterday. I got a callback from one of them this morning.

Wtf.

Feels good man.

CLS student, is there any point in mass mailing NYC firms until we get our list of firms that we are interviewing with at EIP?

Did you guys personalize each cover letter? I thought the point of mass mailing was to just get a bunch of stuff out. Personalizing would take time.

If you have time, you should personalize priority letters. If you do not have time, then obviously you should just get quantity out.

Thanks. In that regard, how personalized? Like, 'I really like transactional/DC, here's why' or 'I really like your firm XYZ, here's why'?

What have you all used for resources for mass mail targets? I've only used NALP, Vault (which both only lead to big law firms) and any firms that hired alums on Martindale. All for geographic areas I'm targeting of course.

Rising 3L... any advice? I've developed some good experience in employee benefits / executive compensation, and supposedly some firms are looking for that. Should I go all in and say this is what I want to do, or should I keep it general?

Obviously for firms that don't do employee benefits / executive comp. in a big way, I would not say that's what I want to do.

As a 3L another worry is that if they hire on a needs-basis, what if they have an opening a couple months from now... can I send another application at that point? Won't they remember the earlier one that they dinged?
