Can anyone familiar with Pufer's guide/reasoning tell me why no black suit? Why only Navy/Charcoal?

For 99% of firms/recruiters it is fine, but you run the risk of interviewing with someone old or just opinionated who believes that black is exclusively for funerals or formal events. Pufer's guide errors on the side of pretty heavy conservatism to avoid pissing off an outlier.FryBreadPower wrote:Can anyone familiar with Pufer's guide/reasoning tell me why no black suit? Re: J&Ms - They are really good shoes but not at $175. You should be able to regularly get them for closer to $120, maybe as low as 100.

That's a good shoe though and should do the job well into your less-on-a-budget years. (As long as the leather is good and smooth, something you can only judge in person. That first one you posted looked a little rough).Jsa725 wrote:Hmmm... There is this one too: J&M Cap Toe, Black

Those look to be oxblood in color. The first ones you posted are fine. Also note that the Park Avenues will be on sale for roughly $200 at the upcoming Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.Jsa725 wrote:Hmmm... There is this one too: J&M Cap Toe, Black

Edit: I see now it says black. In any event, make sure they're black. But like others said I would shop for a better deal.
That rule is not at all unique to Pufer's guide. It's a universal rule that frequently sparks heated debate. Black is traditionally the color of evening wear. Tuxedos and the like. Fashion houses make black suits that you can put on when you go to the club. But business wear is charcoal or navy (or various other colors outside of interviews). It's just the way it is.FryBreadPower wrote:Can anyone familiar with Pufer's guide/reasoning tell me why no black suit? Why only Navy/Charcoal?
Now, you might think you see lots of people wearing black suits. I think a major cause of newcomers to business fashion disagreeing with this rule is that they think they see everyone in the city breaking it. But now that you know the difference, look a little closer, and you'll see that everyone is actually wearing dark charcoals and navies that can look black if you don't know better.

It says black in the link, but if you scroll down on the page you see that the bordeaux one is selected for show.Bronte wrote:Those look to be oxblood in color. The first ones you posted are fine. Aw, that makes sense. Thank you for the explanation! Time for me to go fetch a charcoal suit.Bronte wrote:That rule is not at all unique to Pufer's guide. If you already have a black suit and money is tight, I think you can get away with it. Just make sure the rest of your game is correct. But if you can afford it, wouldn't hurt to get a charcoal suit.FryBreadPower wrote:Aw, that makes sense. Thank you for the explanation! Time for me to go fetch a charcoal suit.

Either is fine.Jsa725 wrote:Ok... Now that I've decided to wait until Nordy's Anny Sale for shoes, what is the correct color interview suit. Navy or Charcoal? I was going to go Navy until the above poster mentioned Charcoal.

Honestly I'm just going charcoal because I've never owned a charcoal suit before. I used to own a navy suit a few years back--but moths were not kind to it.Jsa725 wrote:Ok... Either is fine. In my experience more people seem to wear charcoal, but it's pretty close. Charcoal technically goes with more colors (i.e. everything), but navy is extremely versatile too.

I have this exact shoe in black. Good shoe, but not worth $175. If you can get it for around $130 probably worth it.Jsa725 wrote:Hmmm... There is this one too: J&M Cap Toe, Black

I agree. Why spend $175 on a pair of shoes if you can get a vastly superior $229 shoe from Nordstrom right now?chrisbru wrote:I have this exact shoe in black. Good shoe, but not worth $175. That might be a good deal if you're strapped for cash and need an OCI shoe.

Re: OCI/callbacks/etc Men's Clothing Mega-thread
yes. the melton is by far the better option between the j&m's posted this morning. the other j&m is on a particularly unattractive last, maybe their worst. in a vacuum, i would pay 170 for the melton before i paid 100 for the other one (although you shouldn't need to pay 170 to get it)romothesavior wrote:I agree. Shoebuy.com always has sales going on where you can get Melton's (and many others) for 20-30% off. I picked up a pair of Melton's for $125 that way.
