For 99% of firms/recruiters it is fine, but you run the risk of interviewing with someone old or just opinionated who believes that black is exclusively for funerals or formal events. Pufer's guide errors on the side of pretty heavy conservatism to avoid pissing off an outlier.



Re: J&Ms - They are really good shoes but not at $175. You should be able to regularly get them for closer to $120, maybe as low as 100.

That's a good shoe though and should do the job well into your less-on-a-budget years. (As long as the leather is good and smooth, something you can only judge in person. That first one you posted looked a little rough).

Those look to be oxblood in color. The first ones you posted are fine. Also note that the Park Avenues will be on sale for roughly $200 at the upcoming Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Edit: I see now it says black. In any event, make sure they're black. But like others said I would shop for a better deal.

That rule is not at all unique to Pufer's guide. It's a universal rule that frequently sparks heated debate. Black is traditionally the color of evening wear. Tuxedos and the like. Fashion houses make black suits that you can put on when you go to the club. But business wear is charcoal or navy (or various other colors outside of interviews). It's just the way it is.

Now, you might think you see lots of people wearing black suits. I think a major cause of newcomers to business fashion disagreeing with this rule is that they think they see everyone in the city breaking it. But now that you know the difference, look a little closer, and you'll see that everyone is actually wearing dark charcoals and navies that can look black if you don't know better.

If you already have a black suit and money is tight, I think you can get away with it. Just make sure the rest of your game is correct. But if you can afford it, wouldn't hurt to get a charcoal suit.

Honestly I'm just going charcoal because I've never owned a charcoal suit before. I used to own a navy suit a few years back--but moths were not kind to it.

Either is fine. In my experience more people seem to wear charcoal, but it's pretty close. Charcoal technically goes with more colors (i.e. everything), but navy is extremely versatile too.

yes. the melton is by far the better option between the j&m's posted this morning. the other j&m is on a particularly unattractive last, maybe their worst. in a vacuum, i would pay 170 for the melton before i paid 100 for the other one (although you shouldn't need to pay 170 to get it)
