Jacket but no tie reminds me of a Miami realtor.masque du pantsu wrote:So just to get it in here near the top, since i see there is the usual discussion on the topic: my tip for the first day is that you should feel free to go ahead and wear a suit, even if the firm is business casual. Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
So I like the Adrianna Papell dress, but it's a little long for my taste (I would prefer that it hit right above the knees) and I'm not totally sold on the side pleats. Either going to keep it and get it hemmed, or will return it and try again! The other dress was unfortunately a bust, although it had pockets(!).fkt18 wrote:I think it'll be arriving on Tuesday, I'll let you know how I like it! Thank you for the follow-up info! Bummer the one dress was a bust, especially with pockets! The lack of pockets in most women's workwear is truly infuriating.fkt18 wrote:So I like the Adrianna Papell dress, but it's a little long for my taste (I would prefer that it hit right above the knees) and I'm not totally sold on the side pleats. Yeah but that is apparently dressing up now--I agree I don't like that look. I would just prefer biz formal everywhere--no need to question what is and is not appropriate. And with startups like combatant gentleman it is not expensive to buy tailored suits.FluffMonster wrote:Jacket but no tie reminds me of a Miami realtor.masque du pantsu wrote:So just to get it in here near the top, since i see there is the usual discussion on the topic: my tip for the first day is that you should feel free to go ahead and wear a suit, even if the firm is business casual. I just want flattering sheath dresses that are affordable, machine-washable, have pockets, and hit 1-2 inches above the knee... is that too much to ask for?
I will keep trying, and once I'm no longer broke my options should be a bit better.

Yeah, I've been checking out Ann Taylor and Loft, but I haven't been loving what's on their websites. I'll keep looking in case they add new items though!IsThisForReal wrote:Try Ann Taylor? Ha, okay i shouldn't have been so negative. And all these things work for some people, not for others. Just do what works for you, don't stress. Suit with no tie is probably most common approach though in my firm, at least for associates (NYC corporate).

Unless you're at a firm that actually works its summers, it is unlikely that you'll ever need to take documents or a laptop home. Use whatever you want. You can use a backpack and no one will care. Just don't be the summer with a hard sided briefcase.BourneAgain wrote:Have we discussed bags for men? Am I going to be carrying any documents, a laptop, or etc.?

But there are always events and things that call for dressing up. Plus most had an internship after their 1L summer that required bus cas dress at the least. Maybe it's just because I'm not a 22 year old but wearing the same suit and/or same shirt over and over again seems quite unappealing to me.
