I'm sure it varies by firm, but does anyone have a rough idea of what the interview to offer ratio is? They know I am going to have to fly in. Would they ask me to do that if the job wasn't mine to lose?
Impossible to say without knowing the firm or your sitch
In general after going through the 1L and 2L job search I would say "Do your best" and "Don't get your hopes up too much"
Good luck man, crush it
Thanks for the response and well wishes, Zuck. Definitely going to do my best to crush it. I'm trying to keep things in perspective, and am not getting my hopes up too much. It's tough not to feel the pressure given how much rides on this though.
I would still appreciate a ballpark ratio of interviews to offers if anyone with experience can provide one. Even if anecdotal. Would help quell (or aggravate) the nerves.
I interviewed with 2 firms for 1L spots, both interviewed about 20-30 people from my school and hired about 2-3. No idea how many interviews they did overall
For 2L hiring it's all over the map. For some, if you get to callback the offer rate is like 80-90%. Other firms call back everyone and only offer 20ish%
It really is impossible to say in a vacuum

Thanks for this. You know what Tom Petty said about the waiting.

Many of these 1L firms are flying you out to audition themselves for 2L OCI. That's often the point of these 1L positions in the first place, other than diversity reasons. I think this is more likely to be the case in big markets, like LA/SF, where lots of people are flown out and only a couple people get offers. Anecdotally, I can recall some firms in smaller markets that only flew out a couple of people and hired one. Regardless, the CB/offer ratio is probably much lower on avergage, given the greater competition for 1L spots, so the job really isn't yours to lose
eta: basically what the above guy said lol

Even if you don't get an offer, 1L CB's are a) valuable, valuable practice, to make your mistakes early on rather than later when it actually matters, and b) a strong networking opportunity, which can (but obviously won't always) lead to pre-OCI callbacks.

Good points. It will be a valuable experience regardless of the ultimate outcome. I'd still prefer the job though.

I've managed to get 2 interviews guaranteed for 2L, so that's a success still.

Applied to TX market with quasi-ties and got a few interviews over the break, but haven't heard anything. Lots of TX firms said to hit them back when grades come in.
At one of the interviews I was one of two non-diverse candidates from a pool of at least 15 or so; it's tough out there.

Dings for what? Public interest ? Judicial? Or biglaw/midlaw firms?
I've been anxiously waiting to hear from places .... wondering if anyone's in the office this week...

Mostly biglaw/midlaw firms. I've heard nothing back from judges yet.
FWIW, I've heard hiring is generally slow until Jan/Feb.

Too soon to start feeling hopeless? Not a single interview so far. Mind you, just started applying a little before Christmas. But still can't shake the feeling.

No. Waaaay too soon. Almost everyone gets something before the summer so don't worry unnecessarily.

I submitted many apps on Dec. 1st and currently have had 4 interviews consisting of biglaw and large IP boutique firms in major markets. About 1/3 of my apps came back with the whole "sorry, we don't take 1Ls, but please apply next summer...".
For those who submitted apps recently and haven't heard anything, don't worry, I've noticed that many recruiters are out of the office for about two weeks spanning from just before Christmas to around Jan. 5th, so I'm guessing you'll begin to hear back the second week of Jan. regarding those applications.

+1 woke up to 3 NY dings.
One of them only hired from local NY schools for 1L.
Two weren't hiring 1Ls at all despite the NALP reporting they did in previous years.

Firms have already filled their slots and are already sending out rejections?
This can't be good for me--I applied to some the last few days before Christmas and am getting the rest out in time to beat the NYE deadlines.
I figured my preLS resume wasn't enough for me to be hired before grades come out. Right now I'm just another face in the sea whose only selling points are HYS and maybe diverse in the sense of anything but a straight white male is diverse (i.e., one or more of female/LGBT/Asian)
The upperclassmen "advisors" said that they didnt begin their job apps till Jan. Even if an opening lists an e.g. 12/31 deadline, could it be that it's too late to apply since they received all the resumes they need on 12/1 or 12/2?

Well if you don't turn /any apps in you can be 100% sure you're getting nothing.
Also, I am a little concerned your attitude might come through in person. If you walk around thinking you don't have anything to offer, other people will be liable to agree. You have HYS- that's a big thing.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
