3.51. Not straight through, decent WE.
NY: 11 PS; 8A
Secondary 1: 9PS; 1A
Secondary 2: 4PS; 3A
Did much better in the secondaries than in NY. Definitely thrilled so this isn't complaining, but with over 23 PS, what are thoughts on dropping a PS for a lottery that I'm almost sure to get (I got not-invited at my number 1 firm, which is also the place I most want to work)?

3.4ish. Worked, but not post-college.
New York: 11 preselects, 7 alternates.
Looking at which firms picked me and wishing that I had bid less conservatively.

Don't see any harm in accepting 22 interviews and leaving yourself the one spot for the lottery, especially since it's the place you most want to work.Anonymous User wrote:3.51. Not straight through, decent WE.

Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
About 3.46, K-JD. Bid New York, LA, and Dallas (also threw two bids at DC, but didn't get either).
New York: 35 bids, 7 preselects, 11 alternates
LA: 4 bids, 3 preselects, 1 alternate
Dallas: 9 bids, 6 preselects, 1 alternate
Grand total: 16 preselects, 13 alternates
It seems to me, from looking at the firms I got preselects/alternates with, as well as other people's totals and last years thread, that firms might have done a better job this year of preselecting people in their range, rather than just preselecting all the top grades. Anyone else get that impression?

Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
Hard to say. I know a few people in the top 10%, and they did VERY well. People could have just bid more wisely this year. There are also more total interview slots than last year, so it could just be that too. I doubt firms will ever stop prioritizing grades.Anonymous User wrote:About 3.46, K-JD. Apparently all the cool kids are doing it. Top 5%, WE. Bid NY, DC, three major non-NY/DC markets (M1 strong ties, M2 some ties, M3 no real ties other than loving the city), and one government position.
NY: 14 PS; 3 A / 21 bids
DC: 11 PS; 4 A; Weil(?) / 16 bids
M1: 4 PS / 4 bids
M2: 3 PS / 4 bids
M3: 4 PS / 4 bids
Gov: 1 PS / 1 bid
NY: 14 PS; 3 A / 21 bids
DC: 11 PS; 4 A; Weil(?) / 16 bids
M1: 4 PS / 4 bids
M2: 3 PS / 4 bids
M3: 4 PS / 4 bids
Gov: 1 PS / 1 bid

Very well done. BTW, to those curious, this will be how alternates turn into preselects, since he/she will have to decline 14 preselects.Anonymous User wrote:Apparently all the cool kids are doing it. Top 5%, WE. Anon above. I'll decline at least 15. One of the NY alternates was my top selection. If I have to, I'll play the lottery to hopefully pick up the interview.5ky wrote:Very well done. In regards to that, you can always special request that firm so you don't have to dip below 23 interviews. You might have to get KD's permission, but if you are at the cap and want to special request one or two firms that are very important to you, he will generally let you.

Not straight through. Worked for one year in a job that sounds legit.albanach wrote:Curious to know if you went straight through, or have any significant work experience? Sounds like you had a pretty good round even if NY was a bit disappointing.Anonymous User wrote:Top 15% or so
28 PS, mostly in secondary markets.
Tougher going in NY: Went 8 for 29 with 5 Alts, only got 1 v20 even though I bid most of them.

Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
Congrats to some of the posters above with crazy numbers of PSs. (please decline some in NY, I'd love them!)
For those of us with slightly less PS, but lots of alternates, does anyone know how many alternates firms choose? I know I can only speculate, but curious what the chances are of some of my alternates turning into interviews.

I was around top 15% last year going almost all NY and a few DC. I had 18 preselects and 13 alternates. 6 of my alternates turned into preselects, and I special requested my way into an interview with a 7th alternate.Anonymous User wrote:Congrats to some of the posters above with crazy numbers of PSs. Damn. Well this definitely seems better than last year, unless there a ton of people who got killed but aren't posting.Anonymous User wrote:3.24 GPA. 18 pre selects all secondary markets. 6 alternates, 1 NY

Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
There are, what, ten to fifteen people who have posted OGI preselects on here? Only one is below median, and just barely. Only three or four are below 75th percentile. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that the people who did not do well aren't lining up to post their results on here.Anonymous User wrote:Damn. Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
I'll definitely confirm this. I posted my results (because I was happy with them and in the top 25%) but from talking with friends I know not everyone has as many PSs as the people who have been posting here.pertristis wrote:There are, what, ten to fifteen people who have posted OGI preselects on here? It seems like it might be common sense, but does anyone have any thoughts about special requesting firms that you are an alternate for versus firms which didn't select you at all?

Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
I'm this anon. I have ties to all the markets I got preselects for with the exception of two. Also, I don't think many other students are interested in these markets. I do know that having more firms this year helped me because 3 of my PS are with firms that weren't at OGI last year.Anonymous User wrote:Damn. Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
I posted a page back ago.
I am significantly below median (significantly!!!)
and got 8 preselects
and 4 alternates.
None in NY. I dont think this is great, but then again I also dont think this is a poor starting point.
so things, in my mind, are looking up.

Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
Is the general consensus that, if we have more than 23 PS, we should accept 23 PS? I'm thinking about declining my way down to 20 or 21 (mostly want to ditch the secondary market firms that pay below market and don't really have practices that interest me much), and then hoping to get some of the firms I'm most interested in via the lottery, as alternates, or with special requests. Terrible idea? I'm somewhere between top 20-25%, non URM, WE.

Re: 2012 UVA OGI Thread
I don't think that's the consensus, no. It probably depends somewhat on your bid list. Did you strike out on your top ranked firms? Are they the type of firms that most people will have ranked really highly? I don't think it's all that risky to drop one or two firms, particularly when you are top 25%, if you're a lock to get one or two via lottery.Anonymous User wrote:Is the general consensus that, if we have more than 23 PS, we should accept 23 PS?
