lots of work will involve a beauty contest these days, so a potential client will talk with multiple firmsBigZuck wrote:Smog- what is "research for pitches?"
but that poses two problems (1) you can't show up with nothing because you want to impress them and explain what you would do for them but (2) you can't bill anyone for the work you do in preparation for the pitch because there's no client yet
so, it's work that can't be billed but needs to be done. real lawyers can speak more to this, but I think the reasons you'd do it as an associate is to build a relationship with that partner and so you'd have the ability to work on the matter later
as a summer, you get some of those benefits, but without the problem that it isn't billable. more importantly, it is more likely to be fun work, because you're not actually writing anything that'll be filed.

First friday in the office, which is purportedly a "jeans friday." However, most every attorney in the office dresses above the biz caz code. Jeans = no offer?

"Follow what the attorneys do" seems to be the CR. But yes: jeans Friday is obvi a trap to catch the unwary who honestly believe they can get away with less than biz cas.flawschoolkid wrote:First friday in the office, which is purportedly a "jeans friday." I clerked at a conservative, suit and tie firm with casual Fridays, and a partner told me I should still wear a suit on Fridays as a SA. It was lame.

i think your extreme lack of self-confidence, evidenced by the neurosis displayed on this board, is much more likely to get you no-offered. stop nitpicking and start bringing us interesting dilemmas like "is it acceptable to eat a burger sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches and then get an ice cream sandwich for dessert during a partner lunch." the answer: yes, it is acceptable.

When does the firm ask for your second semester grades?

It varies. Some firms ask you to send them towards the end of the summer. Other firms have you sign an authorization so that they can pull your transcript whenever they want. And many firms don't look at them at all.zosluu wrote:When does the firm ask for your second semester grades?

Ugh I had to do that last year; it blows (although maybe your school has stronger writers than mine so reading won't make you want to gouge your eyes out).sublime wrote:Had a great first week.

Glad to hear your week went well - how's your head doing? Fully recovered by now I hope.

I was 100% not joking. I think I'm over clothes talk but I'm interested in other stuff like food, coffee, what the work is like, etc. Thanks for responding.sublime wrote:BigZuck wrote:BUMPBigZuck wrote:For people who have started, are you guys sharing offices?
Also, how's the food so far?
I know you are joking, but I can't think of a single week in my life when I have consumed as much high quality food/alcohol as I did this week.
Also yea, sharing an "office" but really, it is just a conference room repurposed for four cubicle like desk areas.

CSM is $70/person for summer lunchs with associates. Limited to two per week. That doesn't include if your partner takes you out or any training session with catered lunch.

I'm at a 40 person satelite, so my experience isn't quite so extravagant. I think I'm on balance OK with that, trying to drop some weight anyway.

DPW is 2x per week at $75pp - must have 1:1 associate to summer ratio. Partner things don't count.
