Speaking of which, public transportation is a huge plus in favor of NYC. That shit is nonexistent in TX, which sucks for going out.

I spend under 100/month on it.twenty 8 wrote:I have a NYC friend who stays in the city 4 days a week and she says cabs cost her $200…just sayin’, 200 × 4 weeks = 800.El Pollito wrote:lol no fucking waytwenty 8 wrote:Doing some big city expense guessing here. On top of all the high prices and inflated NY/NYC taxes, having no car means taxi transportation is likely $800 a month (9.6k annually, needing to net nearly 14k). With a car NYC parking is likely $600 a month (7k annually, needing is net over 10k). I just don’t see how anyone can think that BL’s extra 20k is enough to cover all the considerable COL deficits. The mid-law firms I know provide ample parking lots at zero or a modest monthly fee. Of course Fla doesn't have a state tax...don't get me started on the weather (it's nearly May and NY is still in the thirties).
I don’t know where the income level needs to be for someone to think NYC is a better deal (or tossup) financially.
people take the subway or walk for the most part

Don't know. I have another friend who could literally walk across the street to the subway but instead walks 6-8 blocks to avoid the subway. Maybe some folks are not comfortable using the subway?wiz wrote:Why doesn't she take the subway?

That would explain why Texas has the 5th highest incarceration rate in the US.El Pollito wrote:i thought texans just drive drunk then call godspeedwiz wrote:Speaking of which, public transportation is a huge plus in favor of NYC. That shit is nonexistent in TX, which sucks for going out.

Neither is a taxi. Isn't it pretty normal to just walk 6-8 blocks?

8 long blocks must be a good 20 minutes, especially at night (she's a lawyer and you know that 5PM isn't particularly go home time). I'm thinking about getting her a Beretta 3032 Tomcat for her birthday. I keep one in my glove box. Just don't know if that is something she could bring to the office.El Pollito wrote:subway isn't worth it for 6-8 blockstwenty 8 wrote:Don't know. I can think of exactly one person who got Texas without having lived there before and at least two who failed to get it despite having ties.

Unclear whether I was being disingenuous wherever you brought that up (probably not, I actually believe 99% of my shill shit), or just neglected to parse through our class roster in my head. I went and dug up our employment list and see two no-ties (to my knowledge) people in Texas and can think of two ties people who didn't get it so I'll stick with those numbers for now lest I put myself in another hole.

+1 on both counts. NYC is $1500/yr on transportation whereas any low COL city is probably $6k-$10k (depending on commute). Main reason a dude with an SO can live in NYC on $20k/yr (not glamorously, but just fine).wiz wrote:Speaking of which, public transportation is a huge plus in favor of NYC. And I'm so accustomed to being able to make it home safe while drunk at 2 AM that I sometimes forget it requires advance planning basically anywhere else. That does count for something.

Not a big deal, I just remember you saying that in a relatively recent choosing thread and here you seemed significantly more pessimistic
To me, TX big law seems harder to get than a lot of people make it out to be, I agree. But I'm just a dude with a limited collection of anecdotes

7 avenues is 1 mile, like 20 blocks. Walk at a brisk pace and you can do that in ~15 minutes.twenty 8 wrote:8 long blocks must be a good 20 minutes, especially at night (she's a lawyer and you know that 5PM isn't particularly go home time). Public transportation? Half the streets down here don't even have sidewalks. The property taxes are insane. I pay nearly 10K a year in property taxes while a friend of mine who bought a property for the almost the same price in Boston pays less than 3K. Not to mention the terrible HOA's here which add restrictions and another 500-2000/yr plus you have to pay them when you sell the house. Lastly, the sprawl is awful. Houston is nearly three times bigger than Chicago with terrible traffic. You are always 45mins away from everywhere. While money is nice, I'd probably have taken Chicago if I could have a do over.wiz wrote:Speaking of which, public transportation is a huge plus in favor of NYC. TBF if you're paying almost $10k/yr in property taxes, that would imply you have the kind of baller place that NYC associates could only dream of.unc0mm0n1 wrote:Public transportation? Very few people would choose to live and practice law in Houston over NYC
But I'm sure its true that: purchasing power of big law in Houston > purchasing power of big law in NYC

Sup, Adrian?wiz wrote:Yeah, beating kids is probably worse than neglecting them and letting them become thin piece of shit cokeheads.Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:Also, you're living next to some fat piece of shit in Houston who beats his kids, whereas the people in NYC are more likely to have high school diplomas, at least.wiz wrote:I agree with you on NALP exaggerating the difference, but I'd be interested in seeing how far 70k could take you in Houston/Dallas vs. 160k in NYC.Hutz_and_Goodman wrote:Yeah, I mean housing is a big cost but if I'm paying $2500 I'm NYC and I would pay $1000 a month in Houston, that's $18k a year difference, after tax. I could believe $160k NYC equals $100 or 110k in Houston.
Really crude calculations: After-tax income on a 160k salary in NYC is about 96k? And after-tax on a 70k salary in TX might be around 50k? Say housing drops you down to 66k in NYC and 40k in TX. After accounting for some of the less extreme COL differences, I could see the difference only being 10-20k apart.
But the problem again is that there's little sense in comparing disposable income if $1 in NYC student loans still equals $1 in TX student loans.

People who grew up in Texas (rightfully) would like to live and work in Texas over NYC.Hutz_and_Goodman wrote:Very few people would choose to live and practice law in Houston over NYC
But I'm sure its true that: purchasing power of big law in Houston > purchasing power of big law in NYC
Everyone else who wants to live/work in Texas is either 1) some kind of scroungy Mormon with a bunch of kids who wants a McMansion to appease his SAHW or 2) something similar to 1).
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
