I was suprised too. Dick Wiley is an NU alum who took half the K&E Chicago offices with him to DC to start his own firm after he was chair of the FCC during the Ford administration. Re: Northwestern OCI
Here's a question: What is the etiquette during callback season in terms of talking about the job hunt?
Particularly for the (most) of us who are targeting at least partly outside Chicago. I imagine it will be pretty obvious when people miss class to fly around and such. On the one hand, I would love to ask them how things went and hear how my classmates are doing. Also, it seems painfully stilted to me to collectively avoid talking about the single most important thing going on in EVERYONE's life for an entire month. That sounds pretty weird. On the other hand, people will be stressed and nobody wants to be a dick.
Suggestions?

Don't pry unless the person invites you to. If they mention that they went out of town for a callback, I don't think it's out of line to ask how it went. Don't go around asking blindly though.

If the speculation is correct the one I saw but really don't get is Wilson. Who the heck bids on other SF firms with big tech practices (Cooley, Fenwick) but not them? I think some of the other opening are explained by geography issues or people bidding on other locations (my understandign is if you get your Kirkland Chicago bid your Kirkland SF bid is ignored by the system) but all of Wilson's offices including NY were in that same bucket.

Re: Northwestern OCI
This is a bizarre question. The Fall Recruitment process, like many things in life, is a private and sensitive topic for many. As such, treat OCI like you would treat discussing finances or health in a professional setting. If by "classmates" you mean you're curious about those you have a professional (in our case law school) relationship with - if you're just acquaintances - then no don't ask about the recruitment season unless that topic is volunteered. Frankly, it's none of your business regardless of your curiosity or motives of good will. If by "classmates" you mean your personal friends then use good judgment and rely on your intuition - given the nature of your relationship and how well you know this person would this topic be acceptable? Pay attention to nonverbal cues and drop the subject immediately if you notice it makes someone uncomfortable.Anonymous User wrote:Here's a question: What is the etiquette during callback season in terms of talking about the job hunt?

This is a basic life skill. Be aware, be sensitive, and don't go around asking people who aren't your personal friends questions that might make them uncomfortable.

I'm not sure Wiley Rein is unselective, but they aren't just grade whoring. Experience in Telecom or IP is big for them. Someone who worked at the FCC will prob get a callback with 3.6, but a regular joe with a 3.6 probably won't.GoCats56 wrote:Dag. Surprised that two of the less grade-selective DC firms didn't fill up. Wiley in particular. They're like the Schiff of DC.babblefish wrote:To add to the DC list: K&L, Goodwin, & Wiley Rein also had slots left.
Edit: Not an insult at all. Schiff and Wiley both seem like great places to work. Surprised for that exact reason that Wiley didn't fill up.
My year, the people who were interviewing at Wiley Rein were mostly law review types, plus me because I was IP.

Anything over 15 is pretty much gravy. If Boies was a firm you were targeting you shouldn't have put it 15.

Who bid Kirkland/Sidley lower than 1/2/3? I'm curious to see how far (or if they) they dropped for our class.

1-4 were Chicago, 5-18 were California (missed Paul Hastings Chi at 12), 31-36 were IP boutiques. The rest were kind of random, picked up Baker Botts at 24.Anonymous User wrote:What markets did you target? 24 seems like a great haul.Anonymous User wrote:24 interviews and 17 of my first 18
Got pretty much every major California firm if anyone is interested in bid number.

Got 14:
1-5 (all chi), missed Baker & McKenzie at 6 (stupid bid on my part), 7-11 (all chi, Skadden at 11), 16 (chi -- Ropes), 23 (Sullivan), 33 (Willkie), 37 (Kaye).
Happy I got a bunch of the big Chicago firms and I knew that it would not maximize bids dumping NYC after Chi but at least picked up a few along the way. Could have been worse. Nice work to those that got like 20+ that's awesome!!
