I reached out to alumni and one got me an interview next week while he's in town. It's a V100 in a market I have no ties to. So, all hope isn't lost!

I've reached the point where I've mailed (and followed up) so many places, I'm having a hard time finding others to mail. I've been working connections more, too. I'm at a point of waiting for things to work, but I still want to be doing something to potentially get a job.

How did you reach out to alumni? LinkedIn, emails, meetings, or something else? I'm curious if there is an appropriate way to do this without having to take the time to meet a ton more people for coffee - I did so many informational interviews last year (but nothing apparently helped for this year).

I usually started with an email but some progressed to contact by phone. I noticed older alumni liked phone calls better. I think what worked for me is targeting older alumni and partners. Also, less popular markets might work best because alumni really want students from their schools and just don't get a lot of applicants.

Thanks. I'll start working this angle harder. Unfortunately, my ideal market is the one that my school is located in (though I've also been applying to other markets, of course). Did you just send an email saying you are looking for a 2L summer job and wondered if they could be of any help or offer any advice?

Yea, I just asked if their firm was still hiring and if they were that I would love to be considered for a position. I was really focused on the market my school was in too but it's way too competitive. I had to get over not being able to start my career here if I wanted to make a decent salary and realized I needed to be open to markets I never really would have considered.

Yeah, I've definitely been sending to other markets, but there are a lot of my school alumnni in most of them, so I assume there are at least a decent number of applicants from my school. I have also been reach out to my undergrad and hs alumni networks (though there are obviously fewer attorneys from those than in the law school one!). I know some of the markets are pretty small and have done almost no hiring yet, though, so maybe this will help!

Did you follow up? I usually give it an extra week or so, but I'd probably follow up this week. [I'm a fellow 2L job seeker, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.]

Some of my October callbacks said they wouldn't get back to me until January or February. =/

I followed up with the recruiter last Wednesday, and still haven't heard back. I feel you on those January/February time frames. That's nuts.

Mass mailed just under 100.
I actually e-mailed this firm because their name was on something at our campus (local midsized firm). Seriously, look under every rock.
This is the only one I got an interview with. Several firms gave me positive responses to apply in 2014 when they know their financials. Also, I'm still waiting back to hear from two firms that I had at later, much later, rounds of OCI.

Not to inspire my competition ( ) but I say it is worth it to apply if you are able and have any shot (unless you are spending the time pursuing something more likely to lead to employment and have literally no other time in your life). It's cliche, but you can't get what you don't apply for - and considering the market, since we don't have jobs yet, we should be applying for everything possible!

Planning on targeted mailing (what else is there besides networking, which is more of a long-term effort) if bar results are favorable (CA results out in 11 days).

I'm sorry, that's rough. I feel like I get rejections in the mail a few times a week, but it's all the more rough when it is from a place that you actually interviewed with. Makes it feel like the options are closing all the more.

However, there are still option out there, we just need to be open and patient (but still proactive!). I've spoken with a lot of practicing attorneys who told me that they didn't get their 2L summer position until the spring - and they now are in very good, dream positions. It's a tougher market now, but that still gives me hope.

For now, I'm really focusing on exams/grades. I'll start up really going after jobs again after exams (because I already have so many applications out there and am not entirely sure what to do next). I am going to continue networking efforts, of course!

Went to a law BigLaw firm yesterday for a networking thing... Was excited at first but left feeling depressed that I may never get to do the type, and caliber, of work that I want to do, and that the only time I will see the inside of a firm like that is through those type of events... Stopping searching for a job for the time being... Pretty bummed out.

For context: easily 500+ MM's and have 200+ rejection emails and/or snail mails

How are people finding firms to mass mail to? I have mass mailed every firm in the NLJ350. Every firm in my home market, school market, and any other place I have the slight resemblance of ties. Outside of those states, how fruitful is it to mass mail firms with under a 100 associates?

At this stage in the game you should probably start targeting firms under 100.


As far as finding a firm, look everywhere. Seriously, if you see a firms name somewhere at your school - mass mail. See a firm in a newspaper - mass mail. Besides that, check martindale and apply like crazy.

Got an offer this week from a l&e firm in Dallas/Austin/Houston through mass mail. Don't give up hope brothers.
