Are there any firms that have sent dings but no CBs? What is the latest a big market firm will make CBs?

I obviously can't speak to the norm, but I am slightly above median and bid DC and Chicago. I have received 4 callbacks and 3 rejections so far.Anonymous User wrote:1) Can anyone tell me which NY, DC and Boston firms that have not made decisions yet?
2) Do any firms stagger their callbacks (with top candidates hearing first and so on)?
3) What would you say is the average number of callbacks? What about for, say, a student slightly above the median? Obviously a lot of variables go into this equation besides grades but I'm curious about the norm.
Is Jones Day still making CB's?

I'm beginning to worry about NY. I've gotten dings from firms whose median I was comfortably above. Then it's all quiet on the east coast front for a number of them. I don't know where even to begin a mass mailing campaign. I'm very close to going into career services in fml mode. 8 dings so far out of 23 interviews. No CBs.

To OP though, I wouldn't play the how-many-callbacks-is-the-right-number-of-callbacks game. Some people will get 15 callbacks because they bid conservatively in NY or secondary markets, some people will get 1 or 2 call-backs because they bid aggressively in D.C. And some people will get no callbacks because they had a booger on their face for four days and nobody told them. There are too many variables to make one's number of callbacks a quality measure of anything. OCI is over; I'm going to get the callbacks and dings I'm going to get and there isn't really anything I can do about it. I've turned my efforts to following up on mass mailings and sending out more resumes.
Edit: Immediately after posting this I got a call from a D.C. firm wanting to schedule an interview based on a mass mailing and a follow up call. So yeah, now's the time to focus your energies there.

Where are you finding firms to mass mail?

Re: Michigan OCI 2012
Here's what I did:Anonymous User wrote:Where are you finding firms to mass mail?
I made an excel spreadsheet of:
Vault 100 firms
Firms vault ranked for associate satisfaction, summer programs, etc.
NLJ 350
The Am Law 100
The Am Law 200
The Am Law Global 100
Then I did a chambers search for the firms that are most known for the practice areas I am interested in.
I removed duplicates and ended up with about 400 firms. I then removed all the firms that were already coming to OCI, all firms that didn't have offices in D.C. or Chicago, etc. I then went to the firm's websites one by one and entered the recruiting contact's name, address, etc. into the excel spreadsheet. If while I was on the firm's website, it looked shady, like an insurance defense mill or something, I'd search their attorney's for t-14 grads. If there weren't any or were only 2 or 3 I would cross the firm off the list. I also crossed of any firm that had some sort of bizarre online application process, since the point of this exercise is to send off a blast of 100 mail-merged emails. I wrote one cover letter for chicago and another for d.c. and another for firms with practice groups I was particularly interested in. This all takes about 4 hours, plus the time it took to teach myself how to do a mail merge.
In the cover letters I say that I'll be calling to follow up in a week. I'm doing those calls now. I've hear a lot of smaller/ medium size firms will have their recruiting committee meeting after labor day so it would probably be good to send the emails out over the weekend. A 3L I spoke with said that with median grades and follow up calls he got 2 callbacks out of 100 mailings, which is worth it in my opinion.

No idea if there's a norm/average number for CBs. For NY, I have 4 CBs, 5 rejections, and no word from the remaining 8 firms. Of the remaining 8, I know 4 have made CBs to other people.Anonymous User wrote:1) Can anyone tell me which NY, DC and Boston firms that have not made decisions yet?

Summer starter here, so no idea if different firms look at my GPA differently, which might explain the inconsistent results I've had.

I'm a summer starter as well. I have no idea how they look at grades. Some interviewers seemed not to realize that there was even anything on the second page of our transcript. This of course sucks if Property, for example, was an outlier of your overall performance in law school. Congrats on the CBs thoughAnonymous User wrote:No idea if there's a norm/average number for CBs. For NY, I have 4 CBs, 5 rejections, and no word from the remaining 8 firms. Still waiting to hear from 11 Chicago firms one way or the other (though I'm assuming Jenner, Kirkland, and Skadden are dings at this point.) Is there any chance with the rest of them, still?Anonymous User wrote:any Chicago news today?
