What firms are the worse to work for in the city?

White & Case and Greenberg are well renowned sweatshops.

What are the reputations of Boies, Akerman, HK, Hogan?

All the above is right. White&Case/GT/Bilzin in Miami are infamous. I've heard Boies is near NY Boies hours too, though that's tougher to get a handle on.

I guess that's good for Boies ppl either way because of dat bonus

GT ding, CB about two weeks ago. Not at all surprised considering I stepped out of one of my interviews to take a phone call, and had my phone out in all the others. (My dad was in surgery during my callback, and his surgeon texted me asking to call at one point.)

Have a friend who billed 2900 first year at Boies Miami. And I was dinged at GT too.

Anyone know anything about the firm culture / reputation of the Miami office of Carlton Fields?

CF Tampa associate here. Miami is tricky, because of the recent merger. CF has a strong rep for good work/life balance with great compensation (or, that's definitely the case with Tampa. We pretty much set the top end for comp here) and is insistent on not growing for the sake of growing. Because of this, CF is super careful about who they merge with. I'd assume the experience I have is similar to what is still in place in Miami. Plus, the Miami associates I've met are pretty rad. I'd say go for it! I know I went CFJB over a lot of other "biglaw" places, because CFJB is more invested in its associates and won't run you as ragged. Good luck!

This is good to hear. I received a SA position with CF Tampa this summer. The people there all seemed pretty awesome.

I have a friend that SA'd in Miami last summer for CF and he had good things to say about it.

I have an NYC SA this summer and so expect to work there after graduation. However, I was born and raised in Florida and may like to return in the future.

How difficult would it be to lateral from a NYC firm to a Miami firm as, say, a third/fourth/fifth year? Anything I should do early on to increase my chances?

I can't speak generally, but at GT in Miami we have plenty of laterals from NY with much looser ties to you.
