It's clear that $180k is already putting pressure on some firms. But why wouldn't DPW or Latham not want to raise just a bit more to $190k and clearly differentiate between firms? Some firms immediately below V15-20 would literally not be able to pay that amount. It would finally create a two-tiered legal market and provide a concrete recruiting edge. This in turn might justify higher billable rates.

they should just keep the rest of the scale the same and pay first years a million dollars. no other firm would be able to afford first years. in 3-4 years those firms won't have any associates at all. starve the beastAnonymous User wrote:It's clear that $180k is already putting pressure on some firms. doesn't the whole firm have to vote? that could take a minute. It was basically a done deal after Irell and HH though IMO. When Gibson and Latham go 180 it will complete the LA peer group.Anonymous User wrote:...any idea about munger?

Bonuses are still on the low end historically I think, so let's hope they maintain if not increasebern victim wrote:so what are the odds bonuses go back to the pre-DPW/STB scale and this is all a wash

Also, if it's exactly a wash, isn't it better having guaranteed compensation than lower compensation plus a bonus? I mean, it's the same thing, but much easier to plan for.smaug wrote:We will see what Cravath does there, I guess.bern victim wrote:so what are the odds bonuses go back to the pre-DPW/STB scale and this is all a wash

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. Esp. if you are at a firm that pays market, but does some inexplicable bonus scheme like mine.Anonymous User wrote:Also, if it's exactly a wash, isn't it better having guaranteed compensation than lower compensation plus a bonus? Texas Update?
Kirkland
Skadden
Winston
Quinn Emanuel
Weil
I believe those are all the TX offices that have made the righteous jump. Still awaiting a major TX-based firm. As of yet, not everything is bigger in TX.

Also first year bonuses would have to go to -$5k to make it a wash. Not impossible but unlikely.Anonymous User wrote:Also, if it's exactly a wash, isn't it better having guaranteed compensation than lower compensation plus a bonus? Cooley matching all offices--thats the first Seattle office I think.
They are already a minority there at 160, but have to think this puts some pressure on 145 firms to raise.

That was also the first Colorado Match. Only a few were at 160 in Denver, but man, what a lifestyle with 180 in CO.
