Hey, for people who are still looking, a bit of optimism here - just got a callback today (over two months after the OCI screener). I'd already finalized my employment a while back but there's still hope for people who haven't!

If anything this thread should point out: you aren't guaranteed a job even if you are top x% at x school. Stop being a dumb, go work on your interview skills, and get a haircut.
- vanilla kids?
- success stories for sub-median kids are horror stories for top 5%'ers
- agree with the overall premise that OCI is no joke and even statistical Babe Ruths are at risk of striking out
Vanilla kids: People who have nothing really extra going for them, e.g. plain. (Not URM/IP/Sick Work Experience/Great undergrad etc . . . )

Horror stories for 5%ers are good.
What happens to vanilla kids?

Would like to reiterate this. I got a screener from a firm I applied to like a month ago just last week

School Range: MVPBD
Market(s): Boston and DC at OCI; Mass mailed those plus NY and New England/Mid-Atlantic secondaries (all of which I used to live in)
Approximate class rank: Slightly above median
Law review: No, secondary journal
Work experience: 7 years before LS
IP background: None
Anything else that might have an impact? Nope.
Screening Interviews: 30 at OCI
Callbacks received: 2 from OCI, 8 from mass mailing
Callbacks accepted: All 10
Offers w/vault ranges: 1 (New England regional)
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback?: 1 from OCI; many from mass mail
Thank-you notes sent: Almost all.

Been interviewing since July. I didn't apply to NY and the Mid-Atlantic until September, which hurt. Ended up applying to something like 200 different offices. Eventually got a job with a firm I applied to outside of OCI in July, but didn't interview with until a week ago. Still should have mass mailed more markets earlier than I did. Glad it's over, though.

Only 2/30 callbacks at OCI? Ouch. Also 1/10 offers from callbacks? Maybe you had an interviewing problem. Glad you got something at least, and in market you wanted.

School Range: CCN
Market(s): NYC
Approximate class rank: median
Law review: no, secondary journal
Work experience: 1 year
IP background: no
Anything else that might have an impact? URM
Screening Interviews: 21 at OCI
Callbacks received: 15
Callbacks accepted: 6 (cancelled the rest after offers)
Offers w/vault ranges: 6 (2 V10s, V20, V40, V50, V100)
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback?: 1 from OCI
Thank-you notes sent: to screener if I got a callback, and after callbacks

Biggest advice: Practice, practice, practice your interviewing skills. You generally know what questions you're going to get, so review answers with friends or career services, and practice speaking them out loud. Don't just rest on your credentials/resume

School Range: USC/UCLA
Market(s): CA
Approximate class rank: Slightly above median
Law review: no
Work experience: 1 yr of unimpressive legal work
IP background: None
Anything else that might have an impact? Nope.
Screening Interviews: 16 (thank you lottery)
Callbacks received: 5 from OCI, 1 from mass mailing
Callbacks accepted: 6
Offers w/vault ranges: 0
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback?: 1
Thank-you notes sent: about half

I got an offer from a mid-sized firm in a secondary market where I lived prior to school. Struck out at all the vault range firms. Honestly, I just think my personality wasn't enough to make up for a mediocre GPA from USC/UCLA. I'd really encourage people who aren't finding any thing in a major market to research some of the larger mid-sized firms in secondary markets (if you can tolerate living there and aren't straddled with debt that requires 160k starting). Those firms are often looking for applicants (w/ ties) from reputable schools. I know I was chosen over other candidates from local tier 3 and 4 schools in the top 10% of their classes.

i would like to reiterate burt's point that this thread is fucking stupid, that its useless, that the people who post their results in it are fucking awful, and that a spreadsheet would be as equally fucking dumb

Good luck to anyone still looking/mailing/waiting!

School Range: Stanford
Market(s): NYC, DC
Approximate class rank: Slightly above median
Law review: Yes
Work experience: KJD
IP background: None
Anything else that might have an impact? none
Screening Interviews: 19 (10 DC, 9 NYC)
Callbacks received: 12 from OCI (6 DC, 6 NYC) + 5 mass mailed (4 NYC, 1 DC)
Callbacks accepted: 14 (6 DC, 8 NYC)
Offers w/vault ranges: 11 (8 NYC[2 V5, 2V50, 1 boutique], 3 DC[1 V10, 1V25, 1V50])
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback?: 1 from OCI
Thank-you notes sent: None
Notes: Weird bidlist (only bid two NYC V10s). No ties to DC. Half of DC interviews were after labor day.

NYC firms will do anything to get people from Stanford. The DPW hiring partner spent 15 minutes talking about it.

Took out my uninteresting SF results (1 callback, 3 bids--canceled the rest of my screeners after realizing I didn't really want to stay in SF). If you bid SF from S, don't expect it to be like NYC. There are way fewer spots, and because of the job fairs, firms interview way more people per spot. I know people who screened with ten or fifteen firms and got nothing out of SF (despite getting offers from NYC and DC). S isn't enough of a tie, and even if it is, you will be competing against the married people who have the benefit of being able to say "well my wife moved here and her job is permanent so..."

Just when I thought this thread couldn't get any more douchy. . .I'm keeping this for next time someone talks about passing up a full-ride at Columbia for HYS.

Just posting what I wish I had known before making my bidlist, and what my friends said they wished they had known. It wasn't meant at all to influence school decisions.

The lack of self-awareness of some people (especially for someone with demonstrated academic ability) truly boggles my mind.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
