Update from Deanna:
Tax Criminal Section HP Finalists Posted
I have updated these as well. As soon as ALL finalists for ALL components are posted, I'll send email messages advising which components selected you. Likely the Monday after Thanksgiving.

For anon who had their references called by appellate and federal programs, did they each call separately? I'm wondering if each Civil Division group calls on their own. Thanks!

Re: DOJ Honors 2015-16 Megathread
Good question. Because all of my references (with the addition of employers that weren't listed as references) were contacted I sort of just assumed it was both? I'm curious now too and will try to find out what groups called.Anonymous User wrote:For anon who had their references called by appellate and federal programs, did they each call separately? Interesting! I don't think my current employer has been called. I suspect I'm overthinking it. Thanks for checking. And, good luck to you!Anonymous User wrote:Good question. Re: DOJ Honors 2015-16 Megathread
Has anyone heard of selections moving any faster if a candidate has an outstanding offer for another job? I informed the division contact person that I just got an offer that I haven't yet accepted, but I don't know if this will have any practical impact. I assume not but, figured I'd ask.

Just to be clear, people only know whether their references have been checked because the references told the applicant that the DOJ had come calling, right? There's not, say, a separate status on Avue regarding references?

Re: DOJ Honors 2015-16 Megathread
EOIR BIA HP Finalists are posted
I just updated for EOIR BIA for the HP. There is some overlap between BIA, OCIJ and OGC (in that these offices often interviews some of the same candidates). It is possible to be a finalist for more than one EOIR hiring office. I'm sorry to leave everyone in suspense, but I probably won't be sending out the email noticies to tell you exactly who selected you as a finalist until after Thanksgiving.

Anyone get a finalist status change without first hearing that their references were checked? I'm holding out hope that may references were checked, but that they just never got around to letting me know.

I am guessing that alternatives are included in finalists? So if you are not a finalist then you are completely out at that point?

I'm in the same boat. Not certain for sure, but it seems like I'm out of the running.Anonymous User wrote:I am guessing that alternatives are included in finalists? So if you are not a finalist then you are completely out at that point?
From Deana Willis on the Community Board: "Designation as a finalist means that the candidate is still under consideration for an offer. This includes primaries and alternates."
Not sure if they'll be adding more finalists tomorrow for some of the components that Deana posted about (I'm assuming they won't but holding out hope). Good luck to everyone selected!

Ms. Willis posted this last year:Anonymous User wrote:I'm in the same boat. Not certain for sure, but it seems like I'm out of the running.Anonymous User wrote:I am guessing that alternatives are included in finalists? So if you are not a finalist then you are completely out at that point?

Hi, guys and gals:
Another response to a private inquiry that may be of general benefit.
Components may identify finalists at any time. We set an initial deadline to ensure that the Program continues to move forward, but it is permissible for components to identify additional finalists at any time of their discretion.
In some cases, components have focused on their first-round offer candidates with very little coverage in the way of alternates. I expect that some of these components will identify additional finalists.
For this reason, we do not notify "nonfinalists" until later in the review process. Once it is clear that a component will not select any further finalists, I will notify non-finalists.
Keep the hope alive!

Thanks for this! My impression is that Deanna is the only one that changes the status. Is that right? Like the components can't do that on their own, right?Anonymous User wrote:Ms. Willis posted this last year:Anonymous User wrote:I'm in the same boat. Yeah, it seems as if Deana posts all the updates herself. And agreed, thank you for posting that message from last year! Makes me feel a lot better!

Yea it's definitely only her and they seem to be coming in very randomly. Like this morning she posted that more OCIJ finalists would be up next week but then posted more this evening.

Has anyone who was designated as a finalist gotten an offer yet? I know OCIJ takes a while but I'm wondering how quickly others actually make calls. Probably staring at my phone for no reason.

For the components that don't have a commitment requirement, does anyone have a sense of how long attorneys stay? Is transitioning out in 1-2 years not looked upon kindly?
