Should we have a thread for anon descriptions of summer programs by firm/office? We've got enough older folks on here who did SA's two or three years ago who would probably feel comfortable offering an anon description.

I have heard second hand that STB does in its satellite offices, but haven't heard this confirmed by anyone who has worked in one.
As an incoming STB SA, can someone explain to me a "working summer" is?

Does this mean I will work a little or will I be have "normal" hours. Does a working summer essentially mean lots of social events, half-days, and other fun things?
I'm the anon you quoted. I'm also interested in finding out if what I heard second hand is actually true (incoming STB SA). At least from the TLS firm profile, summers were expected at one point to be in the office until 7PM each day. Not sure if that's different now or if it varies from office to office. Interested not because it will change my decision to go there, but more so I can prepare accordingly (e.g. plan to get sleep most nights).

To answer your question about "working summers"--it's my understanding that a working summer is one in which you actually do a lot of work (possibly late hours, etc.), compared to other summer programs that maybe only do 9-5 and emphasize lunches/social events.

STB summer is largely 930-530 but like all firms it depends what you happen to be staffed on. You will surely be there late a few nights and there will surely be days you have nothing to do. Being expected to stay till 7 consistently is definitely not true.

You should do a quick anon write up of what your experience was like for this thread: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=246799

You'll hear stories from every firm of summers that worked insane hours. What makes Cravath different is that you end up working under just one partner so it's kind of out of your hands. Everywhere else you're free to go full brotherdarkness if you'd like, but if you just want to chill and work 40 hours each week complete with two hour lunches and early exits for drinking events you'll be able to do so.

Some of this also seems to be an NY v. elsewhere thing. There are firms that realizes summers don't really add value, so anyone who actually tries to work them close to real associates will get reprimanded.

Well BD was in CA so it's not exclusive to NYC. Most of the time when summers work a lot it's because the associates can use the help. I know when I worked late it's was only because I felt bad just walking out when the associates were still going hard. I certainly wasn't providing any brilliant legal insight but a lot of times they just need a warm body to churn out documents and stuff.

Plus if you're going to meet friends near the office to watch an NBA finals game you might as well stay late for the free dinner and car home. I agree no one is typically making you stick around which is why people shouldn't freak out when they hear an anecdote about a summer who worked a lot.

I thought he was at an NY V5 (I presumed sullivan), but went to Cal for law school? I just remember last year's SA thread.

A friend of mine who summered at STB said that senior associates and partners would kick them out if they tried to stay past 7... no but really, they encourage you to not stay.. there's generally absolutely no need for you to do so.
