Katten needed to be 1-2 last year to get it--at least that's my understanding. If you actually want Faegre I would also move it up a few spots--I doubt they will allocate more than 15 of their 21 to Chicago, and I would imagine those spots would go quickly.

Thoughts on bidding multiple offices? Do firms not like it when you're bidding on the same firm in multiple cities, because it makes you look uncommitted?

My upstanding of how OCI gives us interviews is that (with the exception of multiple bids for firms that don't allow multiple interviews) all 1 bids go before 2 bids and all 2s before 3s. Is this true? So say a persons 4th bid doesn't give them an interview, 5 doesn't slide into the 4 spot, right?

Agreed. I would do all NY and milwaukee. You should put foley milwaukee on there. Worth a shot if you have ties--that could make up for the GPA

ETA: according to nalp, foley's MKE office is significantly bigger than Chicago. Definitely should bid MKE

Would any 3Ls/alums mind critiquing my bid list and/or making suggestions for firms I should add to the list or get rid of? My first choice would be DC but the market is so competitive that I am bidding NYC as well. In the end, I just want to make sure I come out of OCI with a job.

I am a 3.5, MJIL, with DC ties (family lives in DC), and 2 years of work experience. I am a good interviewer. I am interested in litigation and arbitration. Help me?

You have a lot of firms at the bottom of this list that seem doubtful you'll get--i.e. Freshfields DC, Venable DC, Hogan NYC, Steptoe DC, and Sutherland DC. I am not an alum, FWIW, but I did look/use the 2013 bid info OCP sent out and all of those firms/offices had really low bid-to-interview ratios. If you really want them, I would move them up...

You have Gibson DC twice on there and some of the firms you've bid twice will only count as one bid. You need to add 10 or so more firms to fill out this list. If there aren't enough firms in your grade range fill out the bottom with some more NY firms with big classes, even if they're a little above your range. No reason not to have a full bid list.

Hey, thanks. I agree. Firms like Steptoe are likely out of my GPA range so I didn't want to rank them too high on my list. Do you think it would be better to just pull them altogether from the list?

Oops, thanks. I was switching between an excel doc and TLS and must've goofed. Also, thanks for the advice. I will add some higher ranked NYC firms to end.

Hi guys and gals, would anyone mind critiquing my bidlist? I'm sitting at a 3.25, fully aware that the chances of striking out are palpable. Still, I'm going into OCI hoping for the best. I was born and raised in Boston and went to college in Atlanta - hence why I'm including those cities. The majority of firms are NYC, though. Probably should add that I'm K-JD. I like to think I'm a good interviewer, but who knows how bad my nerves will be... :(

Team, is it true that what you rank a firm does not impact your likelihood of getting pulled off the waitlist? Ie, am I no more likely to get Howard, Dempsey, and Mr. Brian McBride LLP after I miss out on it ranking it second than if I ranked it last?

No actual knowledge, but that doesn't make sense to me. Waitlists generally have a ranking. I would assume OCI waitlists are ranked with the people who just missed out on interviews at the very top, meaning that the higher you ranked the firm originally, the more likely you would be to get off of it.

Eh it says they maintain a waitlist and that they pull people randomly off the waitlist as other students drop. But that's pretty vague. They don't say how many people are on the waitlist in the first place, so it could be a small number of people who almost got interviews. And, by random, they might just mean that if there are 10 people on the waitlist and they all ranked a firm 4th, they'll pull one person out of that group randomly if a spot opens up. It would make zero sense to have a whole bidding system and then once some slots open up in the drop period to start giving waitlist spots to people who ranked a firm 30 when there are other people who ranked the firm higher.

Anyway, I'm not sure how this would affect bidding strategy at all, so I wouldn't really worry about it either way.

I would nix both CHI bids and seriously consider dropping Boston, even with your ties (and by seriously consider I mean I'd drop it). Move Nixon up and I'd try to sell your interviewers on NYC for that firm.

Disagree completely re: CHI bids. I know several people with a similar GPA who not only got callbacks at Chapman but also offers. Katten has similar GPA data.

OP has no ties to Chicago or if he does they weren't worth mentioning. We can harp on it over and over but you guys really need to believe it: OCI interviewing is not only about GPA ranges. A firm with a 3.2 median will not automatically fawn all over you because you have a 3.4. It usually means they are looking for other things, and they can be much more selective about "fit" when they don't care as much about grades. Chicago firms are much harsher on ties than NY (and DC, which cares about other things), and that's much more prevalent in smaller, low-GPA median firms like C&C or KMR.

Plus, bidding 4 markets is rarely smart, and definitely not with that GPA. I'd agree with the poster who told you to cut both CHI and Boston.
Except with that GPA, OP isn't even marginally competitive for many firms (even in NYC - i.e., those with a 3.5 median). I can understand stretching it to four cities. Plus I've never understood why career services tells people to stick to under 3 cities. Firms don't see your other bids.

I think the idea on the limiting the cities thing is based on the following rationale:

1. Firms, especially outside NYC and DC, care about a relationship to the city.
2. Most students can show a solid connection to at most three cities, and frequently fewer (for me it's one).
3. Firms can ask why the student is interested in their city and what other firms they're interviewing with.
4. If a student is asked, they should be able to demonstrate that they have a real connection to the city and are pursuing employment options there as someone who wanted to be there would.
5. Lying is a bad idea in employment interviews.

So, if the average student gets 14 interviews, and they split those between 4 cities, that means they're only interviewing at 3.5 firms for a city. If a student says they're really interested in a city but they're only looking into two other firms there during OCI, that might send up a red flag.

An exception might be made for those at or near the top of the class. For example, a student interested in doing corporate work, who has relevant experience, excellent references, and comes into OCI with an offer can bid only a few firms in a city and explain that away easily (I was only interested in the small number of firms I would select over the existing offer that I had; your firm is one of those).

Of course, at this point, its pointless to argue, but I've nothing else to do.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
