You should be able to articulate why you want to be in the other office. Also, the other office will have to approve the transfer.

1. finish the summer, accept the offer at that office, start as a 1L and ask sometime after
2. finish the summer, accept the offer, do either 3L mass mail or apply to other firms in the target market after clerkship, if I get one, and bring it up when I have another offer
3. finish the summer, ask about switching offices before I accept my offer
3 would be a bad strategy, right? I'm worried about them reneging my offer if they don't think I'm committed to that office.

Re: Jones Day
Two people who summered with me took option 3. Another one had parental health issues come up and transferred as a second year (modified option 1). I know a current NLG who the firm has already agreed to transfer down the road but the office just couldn't take a new lawyer/junior associate for a few years.Anonymous User wrote:Thanks! You don't need leverage from option 2. In fact the firm could take it the wrong way. Commitment is a big thing with Jones Day. Saying "I will go elsewhere if you don't give me what I want" could well be met with "Thanks. Good luck to you over there."

Ah that makes sense. I wouldn't mind staying at this office for a few years until I could transfer. Thanks for the insight!Rotor wrote:Two people who summered with me took option 3. And I wasn't speaking of using the other offers as leverage. More of insurance if they so "no, you can't transfer, and don't bother coming back."

Re: Jones Day
Another option is to check with the recruitment team at the office you'll be summering in. I know a woman from my law school who summered in Chicago, but told them even before the summer started that because her fiancé was going to NYC she'd rather be there. They had her do her SA in Chicago but gave her an offer to go to NYC. Some of it had to do with the size of the offices involved, but I think if you approach it appropriately you could mention it sooner. I'm 99% sure it wouldn't impact your offer chances.

Re: Jones Day
Someone in my SA class last year split the summer between two offices. I think JD is flexible regarding that type of thing, assuming you have a compelling reason. I would bring it up sooner rather than later. Although, I don't know if this person brought it up before or after receiving the SA offer.homestyle28 wrote:Another option is to check with the recruitment team at the office you'll be summering in. Can anyone, particularly someone at the DC office, comment on the level of faux pas having a neatly trimmed beard as an SA would be?

Re: Jones Day
we have several attorneys with neatly trimmed beards. As long as it is neatly trimmed it will be fine. Work product and fit will be much more important.Anonymous User wrote:Can anyone, particularly someone at the DC office, comment on the level of faux pas having a neatly trimmed beard as an SA would be?

Has any incoming JD 1st year received their start date yet?

There's a little variation in the smaller offices, but all the bigger ones start around 3rd week of October.Anonymous User wrote:Someone in my SA class last summer had a neatly trimmed beard. We all got offers

Beard guy here. Thanks for the information. I'm going to keep it and hope for the best. I look like a child with no facial hair.

Does JD let 3Ls work the summer before they start?

Not in the major offices. Don't work the summer before you start, travel, relax, have fun.Anonymous User wrote:Does JD let 3Ls work the summer before they start?
Plenty of time to work later.

Generally no, but you can always ask because there have been exceptions. The exceptions involve very niche experience that the Firm needed on particular matters so they showed up a few weeks before the official start date.Anonymous User wrote:Does JD let 3Ls work the summer before they start?
But if you're looking just to start as a regular New Lawyers Group associate I think the firm will want to start on time.
Edit to add: the examples I know of were from a major office. But I agree 100% with Homestyle's bottom line advice-- use the summer to prep for the bar and to decompress after taking it. You will appreciate that time off after the test, I promise. You'll get a stipend to cover some of your expenses if you're worried about the money.

Which office?
And if you get an offer just as the recruiter. They'll tell you.

I was at the DC office. 2 people are still there, so all offers haven't gone out yet. Haven't heard one way or the other whether anyone was no-offered.

Re: Jones Day
Remember: the Firm policy is to offer everyone who successfully completes the summer. While there are occasionally no offers,it is always due to fact specific performance issues and not a systemic no-offer rate. It is effectively 100% with the caveat of YMMV (for poor performance).

Just got an offer and legitimately considering it. Enjoyed my time and think I'll fit with the quasi-unique methods the firm uses
