[For median people targeting NYC at Penn this year, I'd say the average # of callbacks was probably around 7-9. I know below median kids with more than that for NYC too.

I don't think that's even remotely close to true. Some median folks might have gotten 7-9 callbacks but average would have been significantly lower.

Really? I'm saying solely targeting NYC. 7-9 seemed to be accurate (I was going to originally say 8-10). Firms like Weil and Skadden were willing to callback down to median.

I also go to Penn and agree that the OCI was not good for those at or above median, but without work experience or LR. I don't think the type of work experience matters that much - some of the big firms probably like corporate experience since those are their clients.

I was just outside the top 1/3 (no WE or LR) and only got 2 CB's from OCI firms and 2 CB's outside of OCI. I didn't even bid for the most prestigious firms. Of all that, I was able to get 1 offer (smaller firm in a practice area that I like), but not from OCI.

I have "top half but not top quarter" grades at a T14 and got zip in SF (despite mega-ties). I am having trouble recovering, and I am starting to wonder if the lack of a journal is my issue. It seems stupid to me: if it's not just a coincidental indicator of grades...are they really choosing it for the experience? You just cite-check. I'm using the 10-15 hours a week to do internships that are all research/writing and otherwise piling on the experience. I think it's going to do a lot more for me than law review would. But I could see BigLaw automatically deciding that it's not as "prestigious".

That could be a factor. However, if you want me to be frank, you shouldn't take it as a blow to your personality or whatever because I don't think your grades are that competitive for SF biglaw. (Just to put it into context, my friend who got offers from Mofo, OMM, etc. is top 15-20% at MVP and originally from SF. My other friend who bid on SF (not sure what her results are) is top 10% at DCNG and on LR.)

Agreed. I think 7-9 is unusual for median or slightly above median.

At this point last year, I was still under the impression that I didn't need to know the rules for civil procedure. I got a B+ in that class.

I started outlining at thanksgiving and had to teach myself every subject. I would give yourself a little bit more time (I gave myself an extra two weeks second semester and did much better. I still knew nothing until the month before exams though).

Well I think pretty much every first year student grapples with a lot of individual topics for most of first semester; they have a difficult time seeing how things fit together, and a lot of times end up focusing on one topic or one nuance in a topic. That's normal in my opinion.

What you hope is that shortly after the midterm (or about a month and a half before exams in the law school world), things start to come together for you, and you begin to understand why things were taught in a certain order, how they fit together, and what is really testable material. That is what I call the forest.

If you aren't at that point right now, you need to read some supplements, and consult with your professors. Also, if you don't already have this, beg upperclassmen for old outlines, read through them a couple times. That should give you a good zoomed out picture of the information in the course.

I probably should point out that my perspective on this is a bit obscured. You go to Penn, and Rayiner goes to Northwestern; I'm not sure of the curve at those schools, but I'd venture to say that about 30% of the people on a given test gets a grade in the A range.

My advice is given from the perspective of someone who attended a school where, in a section of 60-65, only 6-8 of us could get a grade in the A range. On a curve like that, if you want an A, you can't afford to arrive to the party that late.

My school has a 166 lsat median; the people here aren't exactly dolts, but I do get your point.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "understands" the material. I'm sure that I've got the basics but then I run into shit, like I try to do a RAP problem and get the wrong sort of estate and future interest 3 times in a row. Then I feel stupid. I'm sure I could explain the "basics" of property to anyone but that seems besides the point.
