I would be surprised if Covington/A&P/WH stay at 160 and become second-tier in their most major market while Skadden, K&E, GDC, Cleary, etc all go 180 in DC. I think the memo is more of a delay tactic/a signal to clients that they aren't driving the 180 bus but, when they inevitably match the aforementioned firms at 180, they "had to" to ensure the highest quality representation blah blah etc.

This is the most irrationally optimistic post in this thread and that is saying something.

Anything from Cali firms with sizable NY offices, e.g. Latham, O'Melveny, Gibson, MoFo ?

This article makes it look like Philly won't be matching. Makes sense since they just switched to 160k last year.
That's kind of what I'm thinking too. The relevant question for me is what happens to associates at the other offices of MLB/Dechert.
NY will definitely match. I'll be curious if Dechert does the same thing they had before this year where literally every other office paid NY market except Philly.
With Covington signaling that DC should stay at 160...we will see what happens.

Yes, Mr. Johnson, you seem to have really really good facts and a sympathetic client. And this jurisdiction is certainly known for plaintiff-friendly verdicts. But don't forget that Mr. Simms is AV rated, went to Harvard Law School, and was on the school's moot court team.

i ONLY seek out th highest-credentialed junior associates for my matters

Convington is a MARKET LEADER in depressing associate salaries in non-NYC markets.

ATL's "email service" for updates is pretty slow and bad so far. updating this thread is x20 more effective

Plus they have to stare out the windows of their shiny new offices, watch Eric Holder walk through his secret tunnel to his City Center penthouse, and watch other firms' DC associates buying their shiny Gucci, Burberry, and Ferragamo with their new raises.

“The Philadelphia firm leader, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, added that he continued to be “blown away at the short memories of law firm leaders.” He said it’s possible the high-end legal services industry is heading into another downturn. In that type of climate, he added, firms are raising salaries only to then “chop the heads off their associates.”
I mean, it's true that associate pay factors into hourly rates, but how about the partners consider taking home a fraction less so they can pay their associates a market rate?
