For those who mass mailed for judicial internship positions, did you guys use address labels (type up the addresses and print them out) or did you handwrite each address?

I've got hundreds of letters to mail out and I have everything on excel. What's the best way to go about this?

May not be the best way, for the sake of efficiency, but I hand-wrote.

My OCS recommended against handwriting because it looks less professional, although I'm sure a lot of judges don't care. The best way is to "Mail Merge" the Excel document in Word. You just put all of your details like address, name, court/district, etc. in columns and then apply them to a label template in Word.

1. In Word you go to the "Mailings" tab and then "Start Mail Merge"
2. Pick "Labels" and then click "Select Recipients" and pick "Use an Existing List" then you select your excel file.
3. Click "Insert Merge Field" and it should show you the column headers which you hopefully named something like "Title" "Address" etc. Put them in the order you need them on the labels with proper spacing.

I thought I was slick I dont think having all LS references is weird. Might be nice to have someone that you worked for previously if you have any WE. But then again none of my references have ever gotten contacted so it probably doesnt matter anyway for 1L stuff.

Are you guys mailing out/mailed out your legal writing samples as double-sided documents or one sided documents? Does it even make a difference (especially for judicial internships...)?

IMO, it makes no difference. Depends on the judge; single-sided = you hate nature, double sided = you make things overly-complicated. It's a lose-lose situation unless you know the judge's personal preference. I applied to a lot of judges 1L summer, most that responded seeking interviews happened to be single-sided writing samples. Take that for what it's worth (nothing).

That being said, check out Symplicity. Almost all 1L's at my school who were paid found their jobs via Symplicity or personal connections. Moral of the story = Symplicity for paying jobs (especially February - April)

No that's why I ask. One is at a firm, the other is a reception at a brewpub.

At the firm, I'd say business formal.

Brewpub, probably business casual but you're better off just asking the recruiter when you RSVP.

how long does it usually take to hear something after sending resume/cover letter ?

I was still getting rejection letters until April/May.

Anyone that was actually interested in my got back to me within a month though.

I got a rejection letter from a firm I mass-mailed last Dec 1 in July telling me I should reapply as a 2L. Also got an offer from something I applied to and interviewed for in January in early June. Other stuff moved really quickly and there was a lot in between. That is to say no such thing as "usual".
