do you wait until you finish your previous assignment to go looking for work?
Or do you just go out and look for more at random times/whenever you feel like it, until you feel maxed out?

One day in the books! I like all my fellow summers, I got the practice areas I wanted for my rotations, all the lawyers seem awesome, and this whole first week is orientation and training with no actual work. And our recruiting events are pretty awesome. Feeling pretty #blessed

Jk. Glad you had a good first day. I keep getting hit with projects with 1-2 hour turn arounds. No way to shape up my shit work product into good work product. Not that it really matters, just more of a pride/professionalism sort of thing

I'm surprised they are doing that to summers, but that's a classic big law move. I don't like it at all.brotherdarkness wrote:Same is happening to me. I've got some pretty lax due dates for my assignments so I've approached some other people for more work. I think it's fine as long as you're not neglecting anything, but it's not like I know what I'm doing so I could be 100% wrong.POTUS2044 wrote:do you wait until you finish your previous assignment to go looking for work?

LOL, that's not a classic biglaw move. That's the white glove summer treatment. The classic big law move is to open the document on the network as a read-only while the junior associate is working in it, without asking him to send a draft, and reading his intermediate save, with notes to himself and all, while he continues to work in the document without knowing it's being read. Try to act surprised when he presents his conclusions. PS I did this to a summer yesterday.Desert Fox wrote:I'm surprised they are doing that to summers, but that's a classic big law move. Re: Summer Associates 2014: Thoughts, Anxieties, Experiences...
finished day 2, getting assignments and starting actual work on them tomorrow. Excited, a little nervous.
A sizable amount of downtime during the orientation stuff, but that's to be expected I suppose?
I know different firms/circumstances arise, and I may be speaking too soon, but I don't really understand why people say they spend all/nearly all of their SA money (I've heard that a few times on TLS). Breakfast/coffee is in the office, it seems like they take you out nearly every day for lunch, many evenings for dinner or happy hour. On off nights, it's not like trader joes stir frys or eating with friends a couple nights a week and gas for a short commute consume thousands of dollars. I might set aside a few hundred to lose at holdem tables but it's not like I lose often anyway

This is perhaps the most unfortunate thing written in this thread, but I need to ask: has anyone ever been non-offered for spilling on themselves during lunch more than once? I've done it two days in a row now, and both times has been in front of one of the Associates on the recruiting committee...

In all seriousness, you should try to relax more during lunches. I don't think the spilling itself is a problem so much as the fact that it projects your nervousness and insecurity.
Just tell yourself it isn't a big deal and move on.

Have done nothing through 2 days, appears I will continue to do nothing through the weekend or so. Literally zero people on my floor show up before 9:15 and I sit around entirely associates and 1 counsel so that's nice.

In any case, that's a super tacky move.

You're supposed to be a rockstar summer associate from all your experience doing cutting edge weekend deals for the most prestigious of companies, yet you managed to extrapolate from one experience.brotherdarkness wrote:Mine was direct deposit; I figured that was the norm.zweitbester wrote:your first check is typically livebrotherdarkness wrote:Don't all firms use direct deposit?goldeneye wrote:Psa: don't be the person to post a blurred photo of your first check on instagram, Facebook, twitter, myspace, Friendster.
