Re: Loyola PLIP 2013 Thread: ITT we BS until interviews are sent
Gang,
I am not patbar eligible and am looking for only IP litigation at PLIP (primarily in DC). I hope that my IT WE can carry me far enough to get an interview(s) at PLIP but do not want to put all my eggs in the PLIP basket. Aside from IP Litigation, I am also interested in Antitrust Law (explanation of the relationship b/w the two from the FTC (LinkRemoved)) and am currently emailing antitrust partners at many firms. I plan on targeting firms in the city I want to practice in (DC) and several of these firms have a PLIP presence as well. That said, would it be problematic if I begin emailing antitrust partners at some of the firms that I bid at PLIP? If the remote chance that a PLIP interviewer finds out about my interest in Antitrust as well, would this be a bad thing?
Gracias

So, what you’re saying is that you’re “sorta” interested in IP, but really interested in antitrust, but wanna use that smattering of science courses you’ve taken in your academic past just to angle for another interview bite at an antitrust gig, or failing that and getting only an IP gig, then to initially accept IP with the intent of eventually sliding over to antitrust, right?
Well, come on in, friend, we’re all pretenders here , at least most of us are, based on the pathetic stretching of our “not quite engineering or hard-science” backgrounds I’ve seen on this blog for the past couple of years. Let’s just hope that these firms continue their willful blindness of the fact at least until we get in. or better yet, that the fimrs know that most of us are just using the IP angle, but hoping that some of us will actually commit long-term to ip and not jump to other departments.
Lastly, I doubt very much that you’ve got anything to fear about the IP department learning that you’re mass mailing antitrust departments…… the large firms you’re targeting don’t really talk to each other.

0L here. I have a crap uGPA in CS from a top 25 engineering school (does this even matter?). I'll be attending a T30 school next year. Is my low uGPA going to bar me from getting interviews at plip next round? And even if I do, will the uGPA prevent me from cb's? Should I just gtfo and worry about 1L grades?

What I am saying is: I am very interested in IP. My background is in IT (think systems engineer) and although I enjoy technology and IP in general, I am not going to lay all my eggs in PLIP. I am still interested in other areas of law. Gotta use my WE to my advantage ITEAnonymous User wrote:So, what you’re saying is that you’re “sorta” interested in IP, but really interested in antitrust, but wanna use that smattering of science courses you’ve taken in your academic past just to angle for another interview bite at an antitrust gig, or failing that and getting only an IP gig, then to initially accept IP with the intent of eventually sliding over to antitrust, right?

TL;DR: pretender that's casting a wide net

Isn't the common rhetoric "Everyone I talk to is my #1"
just make sure you're not cross pollinating. They won't like it if they figure out you tell partner #1 that you LOVE X and partner #2 that you LOVE Y.

1. Bad undergrad grades are a problem for some firms but not others. Some don't ask and don't care. It's best to just not worry about it.
2. There are firms at PLIP who will hire you "for" IP but let you do whatever you want after you start. There are firms or offices that only need you in IP, or only do IP. If IP isn't your #1 thing, I still see nothing wrong with doing what you can to get an offer these days at any kind of firm. You never know what else you'll get, if anything.

It hurts mostly for patent prosecution and at ip botiques. But regular big law firms just looking for IP lit tend to not even ask about UGPA. So it will make it harder if you get bad 1L grades (which makes getting the big law firms a lot harder)lhanvt13 wrote:0L here. How crap is crap? I think above 3.0 is fine. Below 3.0 is a problem. Also, do you have work experience? A lot of experience, I THINK, will mitigate the poor UGPA.

2.75 k-JD a little work through internships every summer and started my own website/business during school which I stopped pursuing. I'm not looking for pat pros though so... What do you make of this ?Desert Fox wrote:It hurts mostly for patent prosecution and at ip botiques. But regular big law firms just looking for IP lit tend to not even ask about UGPA. Do you have an idea for what firms consider to be "a lot" of experience?Desert Fox wrote: Also, do you have work experience? A lot of experience, I THINK, will mitigate the poor UGPA.

T-30 or T-20 depending on scholly negotiations. Also, does being a minority help ? And thanks for the adviceJsa725 wrote:^^^^ (lhanvt13)
Do everything possible to master taking a law school exam. Your only focus during 1L should be destroying the final exams. You want the highest class rank as possible...
Where are you going?
Edit: nvm looks like T30

Typically we don't give credit as "experienced" until you have more than three years or soJimbo_Jones wrote:Do you have an idea for what firms consider to be "a lot" of experience?Desert Fox wrote: Also, do you have work experience? A lot of experience, I THINK, will mitigate the poor UGPA.

Should I try to update my transcript now or wait until the fair in August?
