They're definitely happening. I've also heard pretty solid rumors that they will not be offering their entire SA class.

Can anyone speak on the principled differences between K & S and A + B?

I've heard the "stereotypical" distinctions that K & S is "more of a sweatshop", and have also heard rumblings that their work quality has suffered in recent years. thoughts?

Strong ties to the south but was open about the fact I am considering other markets. Good interviewer (16 callbacks out of 31 interviews so far). I do have mediocre grades though.

It is really hard to give you concrete differences. Having worked at one of the two this summer, I can tell you that K&S is a little more formal in its vibe. That was easy to observe based on how the summers dressed and interacted with one another. K&S also arguably has a slightly better corporate practice than Alston. I have heard a number of attorneys say that Alston is better for women.

I don't think the hours associates work is very different between the two. Maybe slight variations in specific practice groups, but on the whole, associates at both work very hard. Neither firm, however, is a sweatshop by NYC standards.

This is one of those situations where you should just go and interview at both if you can and see where you feel you fit better. There is nothing wrong with either culture, and one is not inherently better than the other. It just depends on what fits your personality.

i think anon at 10:41 has it right. AB and KS are much more similar to one another than KS is to a New York sweatshop or AB is to a legitimate "lifestyle firm" if such a place exists. that is most definitely the impression i got.

and to the anonymous HYS person- 16 CBs?! wow. i have 8 and my head is spinning halfway through. it's a wonderful situation to be in, but i don't know how you do it and do it well.

Not going to out myself by answering the first or last questions. The person was amiable, nice, funny. Very normal seeming dude/dudette. No questions that I didn't get from other screeners. I think it went well...

ok enough with the bondurant cloak and dagger, especially since it's a very low chance they call me back.

i had a bondurant screener on campus at emory. it was like every other screener i had insofar as the people were extremely gracious and nice, asked all the normal questions my resume would elicit, and spoke very highly of their firm. if there was any difference it was in the fact that i was "just happy to be there." i figured my chances were pretty low so i just had fun with it and tried my best and probably was looser than for other interviews. but as of today, my assessment was probably on target as i haven't heard back yet and have heard back from others. i'm just working with the assumption that it's a ding.

Just wanted to report that Troutman's deferrals are for corporate only (info courtesy of a former Troutman associate). Apparently, a good number of the firm's corporate partners left without taking associates with them, so all of this year's corporate juniors were told they would have to wait to start. They will be getting a stipend. Apparently, the new juniors for litigation will be starting on time. Not sure whether this factors into the 2012 SA class getting less than 100% offers.

Also, is it true that market salary for a 4th year in ATL is only $150k? $135k instead of $160k isn't a big deal but I think I would have a hard time taking $150k as a 4th year over $210k+larger bonus in other large secondary markets.

Thankfully the ATL-wide offer rate isn't really relevant as I am considering specific firms with specific historical offer rates. Your attempt to educate with snark is noted, however.

Not really snark. Just pointing out that offer rates were never that great in ATL and this past summer's (2012) offer rates were probably worse than what the NALP forms reflect. You should never feel safe until you have the actual post-summer offer in hand. And even then, shit can still turn sour.
