WSGR associate here hoping desperately we match...
I don't know about El Politico, but I work for an SV firm. No SV firms have matched yet, right? I skimmed the thread and ATL and didn't see anything about that.
In 2007, it looks like the bump to 160k happened in January and it also looks like it took some SV firms months and months to match. But this time it's in June and OCI is around the corner. I wonder if that will drive firms to match more quickly this time.....I can only hope.

Seriously? How does a committee of associates "approach" this issue? Threaten to take collective action if the partners don't match Cravath?

'Could we spin this as a PR move if we go to 185?'
SV to 180 + telsa model 3
this is actually a good idea.

I presume we're going to figure out how to ensure that they can't feign ignorance.

Yes, $170k base. Last year, the 2013 class (to align with your question about current 2nd years) got $25k bonus.

I suppose firms feel the need to be located in Manhattan proper because of prestige or maybe very close proximity to clients, but it has long made me doubly MAF that they don't move far out in Queens or whatever. Not only would their rent be a third of what it is now (more $$$ to go around) but associates could actually live somewhere affordable without being an hour away from the office.
Yeah it sucks but firms are selling prestige.
Strikes me as antithetical that a company would want to "buy" the prestige when they could save $50/hour on their bills if the firm were based in Bergen. They already put all the back office shit in Nowheresville, Kentucky. But I guess a lot of things about Biglaw don't really comport with Econ 101.
Only firm I can think of that's like that is Boies in Armonk; is that a special case?
Armonk is not exactly the best place to go to avoid a COL hit. It's arguably not even a prestige hit. It's similar to a hedge fund being based out of Greenwich or Stamford.
Yeah, Armonk is almost preftigious. Is there any precedent for a firm being in a seriously TTT place?
If they can send the contract attorneys out to the boondocks with no problem, it would seem they could send plenty of associates out there without losing much.
But then again, it's all eventually driven by what clients find "prestigious." And if Fortune 500 companies think it's the height of awesome to be in the Lipstick Building, then they won't give a fuck that you can't afford a 1BR after your loan payments.

Seems like the firms that are matching quickly are the ones with fewer offices and are primarily based in New York. I think a lot of the firms that pay 160k everywhere right now are debating whether they should up pay in all markets.

They're deciding whether 185k or 190k is the logical next step, then DPW comes in and says nope, 200k. TLS disintegrates, bar passage rate drops by 50% b/c everybody partying on their new yachts.

It would actually be interesting if a firm came out dick swinging and did $185 or $190. Would the ones that already matched have to re-match? They did say they were committed to giving top compensation.

yes. when DPW raised bonuses last year, Cravath had already announced, so they had to re-announce to re-match, after which the others that had already announced followed suit.
