What are the odds of getting an offer from a CB? Heard it's usually 2CBs to 1 offer, but doesn't it depend on the firm?

That is almost certainly false. It will correlate much more heavily to the specific interviewer. A person killing oci will get more offers than someone having trouble with interviews.

If you've gotten a callback then you've done something the firm likes, but it's no guarantee, and there are more interviews for you to mess up or have something awkward happen. NYC has pretty high callback to offer rates - some giving offers to more than half of even two thirds of the people they call back. Firms outside of NYC are tougher but the larger the firm, the more offers they will have to give. A smaller firm is a total crapshoot imo.

This isn't worth trying to divine though IMO. You shouldn't prepare any differently for a firm because they have a high or low offer rate. Go in there and try to crush every one.

If you're trying to calculate how likely you are to get one offer because you only have a few callbacks, that's a tough spot to be in. But I don't want you to confuse the causation here. It could be that you have a good shot to convert your four callbacks into one offer. Or it could be that since you only have four callbacks you're not likely to wow those firms and you'll strike out.

I don't mean to scare anyone but if you've only got a small number of callbacks start mass mailing and keep knocking on doors for extra interviews the next few days. Don't get complacent. I think that's the trap: thinking you have X number of callbacks and therefore this means you can relax a little. Only once you've reached the promised land can you relax.

What would be considered a small number of callbacks?

I don't really know. Less than three or four is getting into tougher territory than more than three or four.

I think those with 4 or more can feel relatively confident that they will turn into something but it totally depends on the person, the firms and the market like Eldon said. I think 50% CB --> Offer is probably as fair an estimate as any but there's pretty enormous variation between again persons, firms and markets. In particular, some firms historically offer >80/90% of people they call back and you can take far more comfort converting those than firms that have lower offer rates.

The generalization that if you crush screeners you are more likely to crush CBs and if you managed to convert few screeners that you may also struggle with CBs probably has some truth to it.

Ok someone owes me a beer: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... =399774523

This is a year or two old but it's a spreadsheet from Columbia's oci. Should give you a rough idea of offer rates. I suggest many grains of salt for firms with only a few callbacks though. And this might not hold exactly true for U Chicago students.

I think the best advice is to not stop hustling until you have secured an offer, even if you have 10+ callbacks. In other words, take all of the callbacks seriously, and do your best in terms of interview preparation (and massmail, etc.). Doing well in screening interviews is no guarantee that you won't have a bad callback interview (unfortunately a lot of it can be luck in terms of who you happen to interview with during the CB, etc.).

However, do keep in mind that I think for the most part a callback is pretty much yours to lose. The firm has already looked at your grades and did an in-person evaluation. They wouldn't bother flying you out and having attorneys from the firm interview you for another 3 hours if they aren't interested. So definitely go into the interview with some confidence in yourself.

Although this process is super stressful, it will all work out in the end. I'm sure you all are doing a terrific job. :)

As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the class size the higher the CB --> Offer % is going to be. I do think for many of the bigger class size firms the CB is yours to lose as they have already decided they like you. That tends to be a lot less true for firms/offices with a <10 person class, which are going to be more picky about personality and fit.

I do think it's true that no matter which firm the CB is at, you shouldn't be worried about grades holding you back. By that point, they have decided your grades are acceptable and they are going to be more trying to get to know you and see if you're a fit.
