So if you got the best grade in a class, when does that show up on your transcript?

Never? Unless your professor lept for the A+

This is false.

It'll show up as a "Best in Class" award.

Annoyingly you can get Best in Class without getting the A+, and someone else in your section can still get the named award. (I think the named awards are given by a group, whereas a single professor can give you the Best in Class designation.)

I managed to get one in the fall with just an A, and the professor didn't say anything about it so I didn't notice until I was checking grades for spring a few weeks ago.

In that case I might swap out Paul Hastings LA for another NYC firm.

How high do you have to bid Skadden NYC to get it? That's a pretty good option with your GPA and potential desire to head west. Certainly offers more geographic flexibility than Debevoise.

Last year Skadden LA failed at 18, so I might have to try and bump it up higher, but I don't really love Skadden.

I like Paul Hastings a lot, and they had a high FFB for LA last year (and FFB of 1 for NY). The strange thing is, that it looks like more people ended up interviewing for them than bid them, so I am debating if I can drop them lower and just mail.

PH is pretty open to pre-EIP callbacks, especially if you can get in touch with someone there and have them put your name into recruiting. You might not get an offer until after EIP, but at least it's a screener you don't have to worry about.

Cake : I actually think your list is okay, I suggest knocking one higher bid firm like Kaye so you don't miss all the others. And I'd add Orrick. While only their NY office comes to EIP, they're a CA based firm and might be a good springboard for a coast switch.

I also suggest mass mailing all the TX and CA firms not on this list that are within reach to broaden your chances; you've only got a handful of each here. Mail once you find out about journals and use any networking you've done to set up phone interviews ect

Cake one firm you should interview with is Sheppard Mullin. They've got a transactional healthcare practice out of one of their LA offices that they're pretty big about. Also if you really want to be in TX or CA I'd put a priority on NYC firms that have offices in those places. Depending on where it needs to be bid a firm like Weil would be a good one to add, perhaps instead of one like Debevoise. Other firms to think about would be ones like MoFo, Paul Hastings, Jones Day, Akin Gump, etc.

Did minimal research and tried to pick the firms that extended the most offers but weren't completely out of the question. There are some definite reaches but I'm not sure if replacing them with firms that gave only a few offers last year is worth it. Had the most trouble with bid #2 and the end of my list. Have interest in London so thought I'd finish with some London offices. Any addition/subtraction/rearranging suggestions are welcome.

You are cutting it too close bidding 1 or 2 spots above FFB. Some firms jumped as many as 7 spots last year.

Also, Davis Polk's FFB was not 26.

Not OP, but I would not expect firms to jump over 7 spots this year, since that was mainly a side effect of the FFB becoming available to last year's class for the first time, and the information asymmetry leveling off. But I agree, 1-2 spots over FFB is risky.

OP here. Agree that it is a waste to hedge against a 7 spot climb, but would do at least 4-5 for firms that are of high value to you.

Not OP, but FFB for Proskauer at CLS has been very high/1 in the past 2 years, whereas Milbank, W&C, Sherman, Wilkie, etc. are farther down. Good bidding strategy ≠ put better firms/favorites at the top.
