While apparently this forum was made for folks at median and above, does anybody have some guidance for somebody near the very bottom of the class. Any blatant auto-dings or perhaps more importantly, firms that are less grade-conscious I'm missing? ALL NYC at the moment.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
I don't think any of the firms here are blatantly out of your league, but what about Schulte or Milbank for some of the remaining spots? Schulte made a ton of offers to Columbia students last year, without a high Offers by Honors ratio. Both do some good work. Maybe King & Spalding or Fried Frank?Anonymous User wrote:While apparently this forum was made for folks at median and above, does anybody have some guidance for somebody near the very bottom of the class. Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Your selection of firms looks good in general, but the ordering needs some work. The bid list should be based on getting the interviews, not how much you like them or your perceived chances. Orrick, Hughes Hubbard and dla piper do not need to be that high. Move them down to the 20s. Add Schulte and Milbank as suggested above in those spots. Move up Akin Gump quite a bit. Consider bumping up Wilkie just to be safe.Anonymous User wrote:While apparently this forum was made for folks at median and above, does anybody have some guidance for somebody near the very bottom of the class. Re: Columbia EIP 2014
As another student with a very low GPA, I'm going to endorse the general sentiment of it being bizarre that there are more Kents than below-median people (who, as a reminder, are half the class) in this thread. Worth keeping in mind amongst the posts of whether someone can get Cravath or whether they'll have to settle for Skadden, that some people are just trying to get an offer from anywhere that will have them. Not sour grapes, and not trying to keep you from doing your thing--after all, you have serious choices to make while we're more or less locked in to choosing the 30 least grade-conscious firms. Just a friendly reminder to keep the whole picture in mind, seeing as you are such a self-selected group of high achievers.Anonymous User wrote:While apparently this forum was made for folks at median and above, does anybody have some guidance for somebody near the very bottom of the class. As to your list, Anon: Without a doubt you need to add Schulte and Cadwalader, and you might consider White & Case, Sidley, Fried Frank, or Cahill, but otherwise looks pretty good.

And on that note, here's my first draft. GPA in the 3.1 neighborhood, with no WE and no productive ties. Looking to pick up a handful of the traditionally underbid firms post-lottery. Tried to tie it to the Honors report as best I could, but of course an indication that a firm is amenable to taking student below Stone isn't necessarily useful in determining how amenable they are to taking someone WAY below Stone. If anyone can shed some insight on that, it would be much appreciated. All offices NY:

I was looking at offer by honors and I have a question. Most of the firms that are sub-67% only gave a handful of offers. How can you have any real certainty of choosing a place if only 3-4 offers are going out for 75% of the firms?

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
I think there is no correct answer to that question (apart from your own preference and interests) and that's what makes it hard. Also why it's important to have non-selective firms with bigger classes.Anonymous User wrote:I was looking at offer by honors and I have a question. Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Hughes Hubbard is on there. Have been considering the other three (and/or maybe Sidley) considering they have a reputation for liking CLS. Hard to tell whether it's better to target a large-class firm with median-ish targets or a firm that without a doubts goes below median but might only make two or three offers to CLS students, which is why I wish OCS would just tell me where the hell people with my GPA ended up.Anonymous User wrote:Looks like a solid list. Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Agree with what was said above--you can't. The sample size is too small. If you saw that Kirkland only gave 30% honors last year, you might think they frequently went below median. In reality, they very rarely do, and the other years' data spell that out better than Internet scuttlebutt can. With the smaller ones, you just have to guess. It helps to look at the website--you've got more data to work with if you know the firm regularly takes TTT grads, or they've never taken anyone that wasn't T14 with honors.Anonymous User wrote:I was looking at offer by honors and I have a question. I have the 2012 Stone% numbers for most of the NYC V100 if anyone wants them. If there's an easy way to post this so everyone can see it I'd be happy to do so.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Hi all, long-time lurker with a first draft bid list, which I'm sure needs lots of work. I really want the Bay Area (and have some ties), but I'm definitely concerned about ending up with nothing at all if I don't bid any New York, so I'm kind of awkwardly trying to find a balance between cities and among reach/target/safety firms. Would probably prefer corporate.
~3.6 GPA, 2 years uninspiring WE, ivy undergrad (FWIW).
Bolded firms are those that I think might be out of reach - any thoughts on that much appreciated! Hoping to pick up some other underbid SF/SV firms during add/drop as well.

Is there a cap on how many interviews we can do (or should reasonably do) in a day? Looking at my bid list, 9 firms are scheduled for the 8th and 8 for the 7th.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Thoughts on my list below? At high Stone, work experience, will likely go into EIP with an offer from a firm. Also won't be too heartbroken if I don't work big law next summer. I doubt I will use all of my bids. All New York. Bolded are my top choices. Not too fussed about Corporate vs. Litigation, but likely leaning towards litigation.

I know both aren't 100% stone/kent - both just close - but does a GPA around a 3.5 have a realistic shot at Covington NY or SulCrom NY?

Columbia,
Yes, I am an NYU student so feel free to ignore this if you wish, but I would greatly appreciate it if any of you would be willing to critique my bidlist. It seems that Columbia provides its students with more data re: grade cutoffs/which firms you actually have a shot with.
I have a very unfortunate 2.98 and bidlists are due by 6:00pm today.
Are some of these firms clearly out of my league? Any reordering? Any other firms I should consider? Thanks Morningside Heights!
Harsh criticism is very welcome.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
I don't think any of these are out based on grades. Solid bid list in my opinion. Good luck.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Seconded. Can't really comment on the ranking, due to no knowledge of NYU and the allotted screeners/bid:interview ratio, but it seems like a well-chosen group of firms.Anonymous User wrote:I don't think any of these are out based on grades. Solid bid list in my opinion. Good luck.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Okay, so I know what I said before. However, the prospect of living/working in NY is awful (more awful than having to do 3L OCI and worrying about if I'll be employed). I will not be bidding NY.
I added some less selective firms and I think I can get all of these interviews (barring some scheduling stuff), A handful of callbacks and an at least 1 offer somewhere in this list seems doable. The bolded firms seem like my better bets. I'm from a Houston suburb, so the ties are definitely there.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Be ready over the next few weeks to mass-mail the shit out of every Texas firm if you're going with this strategy; don't rely only on EIP for these markets/bids (and you should get something - good luck!).Anonymous User wrote:Okay, so I know what I said before. Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Does anyone know when the first callback interviews were last year? Not when they were scheduled, but when they took place. Could they happen as early as during EIP?

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
yeah, I've heard of people having them the second week of EIP (so for us, August 13-15). I imagine those would be for screeners that took place on August 7/8. Some have suggested taking the rest of that week off from callbacks to recover from EIP, but I think it's better to schedule them ASAP.Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone know when the first callback interviews were last year?
