Had a CB in secondary market a month ago. Have tried to follow up with recruiter but no response. Partner told me after interview that they'll make decisions as they move through September. If I follow up with that partner, should I say i've tried to get in touch with recruiter, or just ask if partner knows anything?

Somewhat similar situation. I was told I would hear back from a CB hopefully in a week. So I emailed the recruiting coordinator at the firm Im waiting to hear back from on an updated timetable for a response. From what I can tell from reading other threads, the timetables given by firms dont really mean much. Unless you have another offer in hand, you might just want to wait it out.

My experience with following up is that it can result in an immediate ding, or a quick offer.
I really can't imagine it can hurt you; I can only see it helping.

Looks like its just about over for me now. Had 6 CBs, including 4 V100s (3 NYC), all 4 of the V100s have now rejected me, and I'm just waiting for the other two to roll in any day now. T25, 10%/LR.

T2 in a secondary, top 15%. I have two screeners left and 1 CB outstanding, not feeling great. Need to stay away from sharp objects for awhile.

how long ago were 2 callbacks you are waiting for a decision from? and which markets other than nyc did you go after and have callbacks for?

Art. III is definitely more competitive, but a lot of people are removed from the calculus after getting offers.

how are clerkships not likely to work out with you being top 10% and on LR? and before even getting to the point of worrying about clerkships, you may very well get one of the 2 decisions you're still waiting. hasn't even been a week since your callbacks ...and everyone has some kind of personality, it's just a matter of whether yours fits with a firm's.

what to do as of now? i have friends who want to work in govt and they won't be in the thick of applying for jobs for a while..you are still in a position to find something in govt, especially since your grades are so good.but don't give up on a firm job yet. I still think depending on where you have already applied that you should still do additional mass mailings. unless you're from nyc and go to a law school in nyc, try applying to firms in your hometown or wherever you have significant connections. firms in those places may be more receptive than nyc firms. i really do think that for you it's just a numbers game and you just have to apply to as many firms as you can and just wait for a bite. you are in a better position than you realize.

100% preselect sounds rough; so do the firms basically just interview the top 10% and the other 90% of the class is left enraged at OCS / their school / fate / etc.?

Seems like a formula for some seriously bad mojo.

I don't know why they would be enraged.

(1) The students had to know the career prospects going in (or at least should have known)
(2) Lottery interviews would be a complete waste of time for everybody
(3) Not really career services' fault when it comes to reputation of the school / employers' preferences / students' not-terrific grades

Depends on school. I go to wake forest and we are 100% preselect. The cutoffs are anywhere form top 10%-top 1/3 depending. So 90% of the class is not screwed- and we are not all that prestigeous of a school.

IMO, 100% preselect is better- your time is not wasted. You apply to the places, if you have a chance, they'll interview you. If you don't they wont. IMO, the whole "they were forced to take me but my personality wowed them" is a crock of shit.

Also, you assume everyone wants OCI. I didn't bother with OCI despite the fact that I met most of the cut-offs. I don't want to be someone's bitch at a big law firm.

Coming from a 100% lottery school, I completely agree.

My perfect system would be all preselect, but with the ability for your top firms to know you bid them high since some firms specifically limit the number of screeners they conduct so they're only interviewing students who really want to work there.

Not on the USS Worried just yet, more like the USS-Check-TLS-EVERY-three-minutes-to-see-if-any-firms-im-waiting-on-extended-offers, but scoping the situation...

Is this the last time we will have to deal with this crap? First college, then LSAT, then law school, now this garbage.

I really feel bad for people who dont get offers after 2L SA and have to deal with this crap, again, and as a lower class citizen to boot.

That depends entirely on how many "legal employment" games you want to gun for. Now that the college admissions, LSAT, law school admissions, law review and 2LSA games are over... you can still be a gunner and go for one (or two) prestigious clerkships, gun for note publication on your journal, gun for editor-in-chief or another editor spot... and then once you get to the firm, you can start gunning for partner, or if you don't want that, you can gun for lateral into DOJ.

The games continue as long as you let them.

sorry to hear about those who got dinged...im joining this thread too. I had 7 CBs, and so far only got dinged from one. But of the six remaining, 2 are about 3 weeks ago and 2 are about 2. The ones I went to last week went well, but they are at V10's, and I am not from a t-14. Not that it isnt possible, but im not feeling to good about them.

So for those of us that have struck out with biglaw, what is the next step? For me I guess it is time to start spamming the just as elusive "midlaw" firms in regions where I have connections. Anyone know the best way to do this? Is the approach any different than mass mailing biglaw firms?

I have no problem working hard, or as you prefer, gunning. My issue is the completely unneccessary waiting and the anxiety and what not.

I would not categorize the admissions process nor LSAT as "legal employment" - only one of these is employment related and it happens to be the one we are all dealing with at the moment.
