Do what the firm tells you to do. Some firms lean toward the casual end of that spectrum, some lean toward the business end.
If you're a dude and go with slacks, nice solid-colored collared shirt, and sportcoat you're good.
Just an extra anecdote, and this may just be a DC/GULC thing (because we're all insufferable
strivers) but it seemed like a vast majority of people would show up to these things with a suit no tie or sports coat, and often a lot of the attorneys would do the same.
I found a good rule of thumb to be if you're going into the firm, wear a jacket, and if it's at a restaurant, you can go either way.
I went to as many of these as I could, and always felt more comfortable with a suit with no tie. I felt kinda uncomfortable when I went with without a coat because everyone else was wearing one, but I'm also probably exceptionally neurotic.

Yeah, I still have one exam to go and have zero motivation. I assume it's not gonna get better by the end of week.

Yeah, I had similar experiences. I once went to a firm reception in slacks, navy blazer and no tie; I was literally the only guy without a suit and tie. Not like it ultimately matters or anyone would ever remember, but it can fuck with your confidence at the moment. Very rarely have I worn a suit to a legal event and felt overdressed.

Probably depends on the market.
But yeah I've been made fun of for being overdressed and I've been made fun of for being underdressed at firm things. Almost certainly better to be overdressed so if you want to do the suit and ditch the tie thing if need be then that's the TLS (aka probably more risk averse than need be but whatever, we wouldn't have gone to law school if we had a brave and/or original bone in our body) way.
Also make sure you invest in some black park aves before OCI or ur screwed

Can we talk more about shoes? What style? Do the shoes have to be cap-toe?

Check the men's style thread. Or, for a shortcut, just get Park Avenues (black, traditionally shaped, cap toe).
Got the first ding today. Most places want grades first but I didn't make that cut for one of them.

Has anyone heard anything from any DOJ or USAO apps? Do those generally wait until grades are out? Sorry if this is common knowledge

For OCI or any legal interview, yeah, black cap toe is the one. You can get away with the Johnston and Murphy Melton or even Bostonian if you have to, but Park Aves Look better and will actually last, so they're a better deal in the long run. Fifth Aves are perfectly fine and less boring, so there's your variety if needed.

If I want to cite a lawyer at the firm with whom I had a conversation in a cover letter, what's the best, least awkward way to address him/her? Is "Mr./Ms. First Name Last Name" too formal?

That looks good. Thanks! I actually feel a little silly at not having thought of that.

I know this may sound stupid, but anyone know the best way to address an application email to a firm? Like what would the body of it say....

Anyone (esp if there's some 2L/3L lurkers) know how a 1L SA "meeting" kind of goes at a large firm, but a secondary market? Is it like a CB for a 2L SA or is it shorter???

I had one where I just had coffee with an alumni associate, and another that (looking at it retrospectively) was a slightly more relaxed callback, but only with associates.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
