no, sorry for the ambiguity, just trying to avoid outing myself (which, I'll admit, is likely a silly concern). figured that level of specificity was enough to figure out whether you interviewed before/after me.

though, fwiw, i doubt timing matters much given that the interviewers are making the calls and they all participated in the process at different points in the three weeks. good luck to us all!

That's fair, with 56 candidates for interviews don't think the week you interview would give it away. I'm hoping my references get called too. Fingers crossed and best of luck!

It is killing me that we don't have an answer to this yet. I can't stop obsessively hitting refresh on the community board page.
Just have to share my anxiety.

Yup I feel that. I have this forum and that page open at all times. If this doesn't all go down before Thanksgiving finals are not going to go over well.

Same question here. Has anyone from other civil division groups had their references checked yet?

Just to save people from refreshing the other browser, here is her response:

Of course! But it's a secret. (Kidding.) We ask components to identify finalists not later than November 24th. Some have begun to do so already on an ad hoc basis, but most are in the process of selecting finalists this week and will not report to my office until next week.

Designation as a finalist means that the candidate is still under consideration for an offer. This includes primaries and alternates.

REFERENCE CHECKS: The Department does conduct reference checks prior to issuing offers. Some components start quite early; others wait a bit.

OFFERS: The Department first issues a tentative (oral) offer. If that is accepted, a formal written offer follows.

TIMING OF RESPONSES: With regard to responding to an oral offer, the Department follows the response policy promulgated by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), which states that offers to current law students issued prior to December 15 must remain open for 28 days or until December 30th, whichever comes first. When issuing an offer, the hiring component may request that candidates reaffirm their offers within 14 days from the date of the offer. Hiring components that have requested this reaffirmation may retract any offer that is not reaffirmed within the 14-day period.

Offers to current law students made after December 15 should remain open for at least two weeks. Offers to law school graduates should remain open for two weeks. Components have the discretion to extend the response period.

Generally, basic salary information is provided to applicants as a part of the oral offer.

Hope this is helpful.

This would be good to know considering that mine haven't been checked yet.

Does the most recent email mean that our status can change pretty much any time? I'm overthinking this.

Oh goodness. Cue the refreshing Avue like every minute.

For those applying to tax, a friend who is a reference said he was called about someone on Friday, so I guess they are checking references too.

This waiting game is the worst part. I wish for those of us not advancing that they could just tell us now instead of letting us wait and obsessing over if our references have been contacted.

Just curious, but does anyone know whether or not we will be contacted regarding location preferences? And if we are contacted, is that a good sign?

I haven't heard anything either. Just wondering as it appears things are starting to happen. I haven't had any references checked so far for OCIJ, but it doesn't seem like anyone has thus far. I doubt Avue status will change after business hours, too.

If you mean EOIR/OCIJ, you get an offer for a specific location - they don't check with you about it first.

If anything changes on Avue won't we get an email? Why the refreshing?

Also I was confused by the email she sent out. She said they have to report to her office by next week, but that being designated doesn't clear you to get an offer--the central office has to do that. So doesn't that mean we won't actually hear anything before Thanksgiving?

We ask hiring offices and components to designate their finalists by November 24th. We then clear those candidates for offers.
Does anyone know what "clear[ing] those candidates" means?? What are they looking for? How long does it take? What could make someone not "clear"?
