the idea that skepticism about the wisdom of attending law school is a product of privilege is not only a gross generalization, but it is also offensive and demonstrably untrue
i did not have such privilege, and i'm not even close to being the only such poster on tls
i know several tlsers, some of whom share my views on law school, who have experienced poverty

if anything, tls has helped so many from adverse backgrounds by helping them prep effectively despite their limited resources
steering them towards schools with better outcomes, teaching how to apply strategically and negotiate scholarships
and, yes, if necessary, sounding the alarm when they're headed towards possible disaster
i don't see that as elitism at all

if NYC biglaw was cool, going to school to take a risk on yourself would be worth it. Almost everything in life that leads to a better situation/happiness is a risk. However, law will not better your life most likely so that's why it's dumb to take the risk.

Except the alternative is not 10% biglaw 90% fail. I came out of T3. I see what the alternatives are. Nobody I know not one person out of 100ish are struggling. It's not rainbows for all of them either but several are in govt making $100 monthly payments before that 10 year forgiveness. Others are working for $50k a year again with $100 monthly payments and 30 days of vacation a year. Others are working hard making 6 figures. Others have started their own firms that are becoming relatively stable in the low six figs. Others have already started a practice and sold it and lateraled into biglaw. The options are endless. This is from a T3. I am in almost $300k of debt with undergrad loans. Since 2009 I have paid $800 on my loans all tax deductible. 1/10 of the way into complete loan forgiveness. Not being a flame at all. You guys are talking from positions you know nothing about because you didn't go this route. Just because it is nondischargeable in theory doesn't mean you have to pay it all. You don't even have to default on your loans because you can just call the loan providers and ask for a month or 3 off. But even if that isn't an option, defaulting on debt is not that bad. So you aren't buying a house. Cool you weren't doing on that on starbucks money anyways.

You can definitely buy a house without biglaw money. You seem to think that people with degrees (but not J.D.'s) who are working at Starbucks during a terrible economic period are stuck at Starbucks in perpetuity. There are literally millions of jobs out there for college grads without J.D.'s that pay well enough for someone to buy a house. That's why there are millions of houses being purchased by people without J.D's. I can't believe I have to explain this, frankly.

A lot of people with good jobs used to work at bad jobs. Working a bad job despite having good skills is often temporary. Working a bad job with $200k in debt ... that shit is forever (comparatively).

If you're smart enough to go to law school but can't get into a T14 or into a strong regional school with some scholarship money, then use those smarts to apply for jobs, get in somewhere, work your way up. Considering there are thousands of types of jobs to do in this world, I doubt that the slim pickings available in law are most prospective law students' "only passion." That's cognitive dissonance in 95% of cases.

i told him via PM that i didn't expect him to actually pay, i was making a point
but if he would like to make good on his promise, i mentioned in another thread that i'd like him to make a donation of any amount to law school transparency
if he were to send me money, i would divide what i get between a donation to lst and buying digital copies of "don't go to law school" to give to wayward 0Ls

Even if the options were going to law school or working in McDonalds for perpetuity (which they're not), your advice is highly unethical. You're encouraging people to sign their name on contracts they know they can't fulfill. They're supposed to be lawyers.
