^(me) I was bio ugrad, top 30% @ a 20-30 ranked school. Still not sure if worth $350 flight plus hotel, though I did read a previous post about the importance of networking with firms you didn't get in the hotel. Anyone have a sense of how many alts turn into real interviews?Anonymous User wrote:1 preselect

Was really hoping for something better...do people still think it makes sense to take the trip from the southeast? Got a much better grade for my second sem; would this justify going there so I can at least drop by some of the suites and hand out an updated resume?
Also second the question about what the little numbers under the alt things mean.

Does anyone have any idea what the alternative turnover rate is like? I have a first and second alternate at two of my top choices and I'm just trying to assess my chances of scoring an interview.

search "alternate" on last year's thread and there seems to be a varying responses. But generally the turnover seems okay. Seeing people with alt (6) and (7) getting off the alt listAnonymous User wrote:Does anyone have any idea what the alternative turnover rate is like? Top 10% at T50. Bio, 5 years industry experience
6 pre-selects, 3 alternates I'll take it!
What do those numbers next to the alternates mean?

If a firm doesn't have a city next to it, how do we know which city we're interviewing for?
Specifically asking for Latham (Tech transactions) but I guess also curious about other firms

7 PS, 3 Alt
Chemistry UG. Slightly below median based on first semester grades at T10, 3 years WE and several years abroad.
I also bid only top firms. I figured shoot for the moon here and bid safe during OCI.

5 PS, including 3 V60
6 Alts, including a couple of V20 and some V40, in the top couple alternates for some of these so really hoping there's some turnover
all in major markets/firmwide (wondering how exactly this works)
definitely surprised by some of the firms i got/didn't get
Major: ME
uGPA: sub-3.0 from a T25 school
no work experience
T20, slightly below average GPA at time of application

Re: Loyola PLIP 2014 Thread - Strategies?
For those of you wondering about alternates, here's how the process works:
On Thursday morning (and then again on Friday morning), they gather everyone interested in a room, early morning before the interviews start. Then they start calling out names. "For Kirkland, is John Smith here?" If no response in 10 seconds "is Joe Lawyer here?" and so on right down the numbered alternate list until they find someone who's there. If they are, they get asked "are you free at 10:20" (or whatever time relevant interview opening is). If so, they get the spot. If not, right back to calling more names. Plenty of people who were 8 or so on the list of names called got spots last year, because it's still a matter of who's standing in the room and who's free at the right time.
I wasn't counting but I think they had a total of 10-15 open spots both mornings, if I'm remembering correctly. Although some firms had 3+ of those.

Re: Loyola PLIP 2014 Thread - Strategies?
For anyone interested:
Major: 3.3 Non-tech degree but patent bar eligible
Law School: slightly above median at T14 (below median when applied)
2 pre-selects, 1 alt; bid almost exclusively lit
Expected 0 interviews so this was a pleasant surprise. I'm in the city for the summer so it's no extra cost to attend.

Re: Loyola PLIP 2014 Thread - Strategies?
So I thought this could be interesting. I'm a 3L who did PLIP last year as well. Top 15% at a T30. ChemE with experience. Last year I had 17 pre-selects that resulted in 5 callbacks and 3 offers (1 V20, 2 V50). Currently working at one of the V50s. This year I got 6 pre-selects (none are vault firms).
On a related note, what are the thoughts about attending as a 3L with a 2L gig? My firm has a very high offer rate but not 100%. I am not likely to know about my offer status pre-PLIP, but if offered I would take it above any of the pre-selects this year.

I'll anonymously bite to add that I go zero preselects as a bio undergrad 3L, top third at a t25 w/ 4 interviews last year from median, none turning into a jerb.

Re: Loyola PLIP 2014 Thread - Strategies?
Aside from getting dinged by Skadden, there doesn't appear to be any sort of correlation between available measure of firm 'prestige' and preselects/alternates for me. Hell, I did better in DC than NYC, which is contrary to TLS dogma. I have a feeling that because you are really bidding on a practice group and not a firm, per se, there is a lot of granularity w/r/t the selection criteria that isn't reflected in what they tell you on symplicity, which is basically 1.) We only want EE/CS 2.) We will take anything patent bar eligible.Anonymous User wrote:So I thought this could be interesting. I'm a 3L who did PLIP last year as well. Top 15% at a T30. For the employers that break out lit and pros as bidding options, anyone know how locked in you are to the one that grants you the interview? I'm happy to work on either side--just curious whether I'm interviewing for one group or both.

From people who had a lot of interviews last year: any advice on how many interviews is manageable? I have 12+ interviews both days and I'm worried I'll be useless by the end of the day ... And that happens to be the firms I'm most interested in. (EE, T14, good gpa, WE)
