I've heard from one or two that they would have given me an interview, but the summer class is already full. Keep in mind that I'm not mass mailing, I'm being very specific in my targetingAssumptionRequired wrote:Have you heard anything positive from any LA firms? Ah thanks for the info. It's a very thick card with an off centered message that says something like "Dear candidate, we don't have any available positions for you, good luck in your future endeavors"harbin wrote:Ah thanks for the info. Not a hint of personalization, no encouragement to apply in the future or stay in touch. It's pretty funny actually unless that is your dream firm.
And at least our clinics look interesting Catholicgirl, I wouldn't be too disappointed to end up in several of them.

Is it too late to apply for 1L SA positions? I don't understand how firms are full when most of us don't have all of our grades. Originally thought it was a waste of time, but if grades are good I might give it a whirl.

Re: Heard Back for 1L SA Position
Often what a firm is implying with the statement that there summer class is full is that they are not taking any 1Ls. I've heard that some firms will take a 1L if they have enough 2Ls turn down offers that they have a slot open. Some firms specifically target 1-2 1Ls for diversity purposes or to target a strong candidate before 2L OCI when they might go to a "better" firm.
I've noticed that the few 1L positions that are not diversity positions tend to be in smaller markets. I know for a fact that the 1L OGI here at UVA is pretty much entirely made of up of firms from Virginia and a few other smaller market states - think West Virginia and Alabama. The reality is that a firm is double paying you for recruitment purposes if they hire you as a 1L. Plus, there is a certain amount of flight risk with 1L positions - what is the point of paying you ~20K for a summer and then have you run off to NYC.? Hence, I think there is a stronger emphasis on ties with 1L SA positions.

Re: Heard Back for 1L SA Position
The reason firms are full is because most firms either don't accept 1Ls, or only do so if they didn't get as many 2Ls as they expected (or, less cynically, got more 2Ls than expected)TheZoid wrote:Is it too late to apply for 1L SA positions? As the poster above me said, a firm is basically double-paying you and there's a lot more flight risk, so it's not exactly a great proposition.
note that I'm ignoring diversity programs, which is a separate discussion

Re: Heard Back for 1L SA Position
Thanks for the clarification. I guess it still makes sense to shoot my resume and transcript over to a few firms in a secondary market I'm interested in, then.

Re: Heard Back for 1L SA Position
If a firm sent a form email saying I'd hear back in a specific timeframe and that that timeframe has come and gone, is a follow-up email appropriate?

Re: Heard Back for 1L SA Position
For both my 1L and 2L SAs I wrote short (a couple sentences) tailored thank you notes on embossed stationary. I already had nice personal stationary from a prior career. There is no need to invest in it if you don't already have it. A nice note on a generic TY card will be fine. Mail it the next day to ensure you are fresh in the interviewer's mind. IME a handwritten note (assuming it is targeted) goes much further in making an impact on the recipient than email. With that said, I don't think thank you notes (email or snail mail) "get you" the job. They could push you ahead of other candidates if it is close though. Good luck.dingbat wrote:I wrote thank you emails.AssumptionRequired wrote:For anyone who wrote thank you cards... Nah, get a job at a PI place and get that law school funding. I worked for a legal nonprofit 1L summer and loved it.catholicgirl wrote:Looking like it's going to be a school clinic for me
