I don't feel bad for myself, I know people who had better grades and law review who got the same result.

Would you say that this is more the fault of the school or of the CA legal market?boalt2l wrote:I don't feel bad for myself, I know people who had better grades and law review who got the same result.

Re: NEW final 2010 OCI results thread that are ACTUALLY FINAL
This result seems a bit like an outlier not representative of either the school or the market TBH. The CA market is tough, sure, but I know people with this guy's grades at UCD who have firm jobs, and there are plenty of about-median Boalt students (and transfers) who have firm jobs too.Veyron wrote:Would you say that this is more the fault of the school or of the CA legal market?boalt2l wrote:I don't feel bad for myself, I know people who had better grades and law review who got the same result.

Re: NEW final 2010 OCI results thread that are ACTUALLY FINAL
School range: One of the schools ranked 34-38
Market(s): DC, LA, GA, AL, VA
Approx. class rank: Top 25-30%
Law review: Secondary Journal
Work experience: Some managment experience throughout undergrad
IP background: No
Anything else that might have an impact?: URM; Clerked at two regionally well known firms last summer.
Self-assessed interview ability (1-10): 11?
Screening Interviews: 15
Mass mails: No mass mails, but I did do job fairs.
Callbacks received: 5
Callbacks accepted: 5
Offers with Vault Ranges: 11
Ended up accepting an offer from a non-vault nlj250 firm in the DC metro area, and a pretty prestigous midlaw shop in my home state. The discrepancy between callbacks and offers is because I got offers without the callback in some places.

No flame. It happens all the time in secondary markets. I think this is fairly normal with job fair interviews as well. Especially if you go to school out of state; in that case the initial "screening" interview is essentially a callback.

Re: NEW final 2010 OCI results thread that are ACTUALLY FINAL
I second that this is not a flame. I went on several interviews at Vault firms that were treated as callbacks, even though they were initial meetings. They treated my mass mail as the "screening" interview.Anonymous User wrote:This is me.thexfactor wrote:Anonymous User wrote:School range: One of the schools ranked 34-38

4 callbacks at top 1/3 and an average interview isn't shafted. It's probably just about average for T7-14.Veyron wrote:Wow, Boalt got SHAFTEDboalt2l wrote:School range:Boalt

At UVA I'd say 4 callbacks is more typical of median, not top third.
I question the interviewing ability of "7" when going 4/33.

As for Penn, who knows. I'd imagine it's somewhere between NYU and NU for people targeting NYC (maybe 5-6?). I don't have any data for Penn, but I'd be wary of going by your impressions as a 1L since the people who are comfortable talking about jobs to 1Ls are a very self-selecting demographic.

Yes, and the people in that demographic tend to be top 1/3 but I've talked to a shitton of top 1/3 people. Like I said, I am MOAR interested in median and that is harder to get data points on.

Guessing that median is hit or miss, depending on work experience and personality.Veyron wrote: Yes, and the people in that demographic tend to be top 1/3 but I've talked to a shitton of top 1/3 people. Like I said, I am MOAR interested in median and that is harder to get data points on.
Since you're a 1L, I would just worry about getting good grades at this point.

When people say median, I assume it is a broader concept than the one guy who is actually median. What range is being referred to? 40-60%?aelfwin wrote:Median is probably hit or miss, depending on work experience and personality.Veyron wrote: Yes, and the people in that demographic tend to be top 1/3 but I've talked to a shitton of top 1/3 people. Also, I started mailing smaller firms before OCI (in August), and had lined up callbacks that way outside of OCI. It's a good idea to prepare yourself ahead of time.

Did you interview anywhere over the summer? Wondering if firms in my 2ndary market are going to expect me to do this.aelfwin wrote:45-55Veyron wrote:When people say median, I assume it is a broader concept than the one guy who is actually median. Re: NEW final 2010 OCI results thread that are ACTUALLY FINAL
Here at NU there seems to be a big drop-off after top 1/3. The better firms with the big summer classes will set their cut-off at 3.5 or so. People above that have done really well (I know several non-LR people with 10+ callbacks) while people below that have struggled to get 3.Veyron wrote:Yes, and the people in that demographic tend to be top 1/3 but I've talked to a shitton of top 1/3 people. So back to the OP, if by "top 1/3" he really means "4 Hs" when firms have decided that top 1/3 is actually 5 Hs, then 4 callbacks is probably entirely consistent with that you're seeing at the rest of the non-CCN T14 (modulo maybe Penn b/c of the NYC pipeline).
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
