Can everyone include their practice group as a reference? I'm a bit confused because I'm in bank finance and 220-240 is a normal month. The last time I started pushing back, I was heading for 280, the last time I pushed back successfully, I hit 300 ... (and yes, I have major burnout as does pretty much everyone in my group).

IP lit: I don't take new matters unless I expect to be below ~200. I push back on the matters I'm already on when I hit 270+ for a few months (without a trial).

You're claiming that 2750 hours per year is normal in your group? It's possible it's a normal year for you, but it seems a little unlikely that it's normal for everybody. I work at a sweatshop and that's hundreds of hours above what is typical here (even though some people obviously bill that much or even much more).

I don't see where the quoted anon said 2750 hours was normal for the entire group...

"220-240 is a normal month". 230*12=2760.

Perhaps the anon meant "in a 31-day month without holidays, 220-240 wouldn't be a big outlier." That's totally plausible. But if "normal" means the middle of the distribution in some sense, then that would imply a 2750 hour year is normal.

Unless you have access to attorney time sheets at your firm then I would take any self-reported billable totals from fellow coworkers with a grain of salt. In my experience people have a tendency to over exaggerate their workload to their peers.

Yes, let's just ignore the post's rampant use of the word "I" like it is a meaningless word.

If that's really just that one guy's experience, why would knowing practice group help him? He clearly thinks that in his practice group that is normal, rather than it just bring normal for him and him alone.
