On the flip side, I am not a big fan of first years who respond literally seconds after an email is sent. Just chill for like a minute.
Lol? What's wrong with that?

A first year didn't respond my emails in like 12 hours. I'm sure he has been ignoring me. Not sure what I did wrong but that hurts. Maybe it's my problem.

12 hours is insane unless they're on vacation (unlikely) or there's an emergency. I would be pissed.

Sadly I don't even let emails sit for 12 hours while on vacation...and I'm not a first year.

OP it isn't a ridiculous question. Or if it is, it's one all/most of us are forced to grapple with given the culture of this job.

Which is why I think this is the best advice in the thread:

Step back and ask yourself, is this worth it? Seriously, this is making you completely neurotic. Was law school worth it for this? You're young and this is still America. You can still do something that will make you happy.

I'm a public defender who was getting my annual bonus-season jealousy from going PI instead of the firm route but sheesh, y'all can keep it.

If you have a relationship with the sender and they know you will get to it in a timely manner, there's really no reason to respond right away. The only emails I send ASAP nowadays (outside of closings) are when letting others know I do not have capacity for their new deal.

First years should definitely respond pretty quickly though (few hours) depending on email.
