Re: Laid Off- How screwed am I?
I can see getting laid off twice, given that OP had said they’re in a field in a slump, and these are smaller firms that could easily be more sensitive to work flow issues. It sucks, but the OP was probably the most recent hire (which means the first to be laid off).
I don’t at all understand getting a biglaw offer rescinded for asking too many questions. Unless there was something really off about the questions. Or it’s not really biglaw.

This wasn't biglaw, but yeah, ATL-worthy behavior: https://abovethelaw.com/2014/03/gunner- ... questions/QContinuum wrote:Seconding this. I feel great sympathy for OP. That said, I've never ever heard of any BigLaw firm rescinding an offer for asking too many questions. It generally takes a lot (either a 2008-level crash, or some serious misconduct - think outrageous, ATL-worthy behavior, and/or sexual harassment, and/or seriously pissing off a Very Important Partner) for a BigLaw firm to rescind an offer. (Yes, some BigLaw firms have a habit of cold-offering or even no-offering a few summers every year, but actually rescinding an extended offer is a whole nother level up from a cold or no offer.)ghostoftraynor wrote:OP, really not trying to pour salt in the wound, but the above sounds like a red flag. No idea if the rescinded offer is related to the firings, but would work to correct whatever behaviors led to the rescinded offer.

OP here. I know the rescinded offer sounds unbelievable, but it's completely true. I was in shock. My questions related to business development at the firm. They said "you asked too many questions, we would expect that of an incoming equity partner, but not an associate."
Now I'm working in midlaw doing a 12 hour day for 130k. Pretty miserable. I should have listened when people said don't go to law school

Your job as an associate (especially a junior level associate) is to do work for partners.Anonymous User wrote:OP here. I know the rescinded offer sounds unbelievable, but it's completely true. However early in the process the firm emphasized their capacity to help associates learn business development. Then by the end they flipped it and contradicted themselves2013 wrote:Your job as an associate (especially a junior level associate) is to do work for partners.Anonymous User wrote:OP here. Isn’t that a little like them talking up their pro bono opportunities, but not actually wanting people to be focused on pro bono?Anonymous User wrote:However early in the process the firm emphasized their capacity to help associates learn business development.
