Yeah agreed.

Though I keep thinking there has to be more of this, some reason why this dude needed the cash that badly...

Why would someone in such a good position do something so stupid?

Service partners aren't real partners. Akin gump ain't going to throw millions of dollars at you for working at doj for 20 years. Firms like that give you a salary and not a huge one until you prove yourself.

That firm that went bankrupt had a partner making less than first years.

This is always my first thought when someone does something this crazy with no apparent motivation besides a relatively small amount of money, but I think DF is right in that this guy might not have been making that much so maybe he was in a bind for some other reason.

He could have been doing this with multiple cases. Do 5-6 of these over ten years and it's suddenly worth the risk.

A lot of doj hires don't maek it in biglaw. My old form would give ya a few years to get clients then boot ya if you couldn't. .

Even if he wasn't going to be making biglaw partner $$$ he was still kinda set for life given his credentials

Now he's just fucked.

Unless he owed someone some money and they were threatening him, I don't see how this ever makes sense.

Guys guys guys

Let's wait for all the facts before rushing to judgment here

Like what kind of wig are we talking here. Full length women's wig? Cheap costume store apparel or a more realistic one? And did he factor in wig costs to his $310K demand?

I wonder if it has anything to do with the buy-in for equity partner that's mentioned here:

https://www.law360.com/articles/457566/ ... artnership

Akin apparently converted to all equity partners in 2013.

"Meanwhile, the cost of becoming a BigLaw partner has skyrocketed in recent years. According to a survey by Citi Private Bank Law Firm Group, partner buy-in capital went up about a third between 2007 and 2011, from an average of $229,000 to $303,000."

Must be a hell of a case that he believed the company would pay $300k just to get a copy of the complaint.

I think the firm finances this expense at a ridiculously low interest rate.

Does the whistleblower of the whistleblowers blower now get a reward for cooperation?

How deep does the blowing go...

So what's the speculation on how many other lawsuits he's done this with? I find it hard to believe that he suddenly decided to do this without any prior attempts or experience.
