If, on the other hand, you wanted to do something like IP or employment, it wouldnt make much sense to go to Wachtell where that work is basically nonexistent. This. An SA offer from Wachtell would be an indicator of desirability in a candidate.

I don't know that it's fair to characterize opting out of 2-5 years in one's 20s/30s of almost literally zero life outside of work as a "huge mistake". It may be a huge mistake for those who thrive under those circumstances but that's far from everyone with a WLRK offer. Their hours are meaningfully worse than the rest of the big firms in NY.

The one HLS kid who gave up the wlrk offer can work at wachtell anytime she wants because her family is royalty in the American legal world. Think about why wachtell is such a common choice among tippy top students at top schools - do you think there is something special about you compared to most CLS/HLS students who got the wlrk offer. Is "getting the nod" in any sense like "getting the rose?" My understanding was that they both required a similar level of willingness to publicly humiliate oneself in pursuit of a singular goal, but I defer to experts.

Also turned down Wachtell offer for DC lit. I agree that the relevant question is what you want to do. If you want to do corporate or deal litigation, you'd be stupid to turn down Wachtell. If you're interested in anything else, you'd be stupid to take Wachtell.

Since you don't know what you want to do, why not split? Even if you have to go to another city for the second half of your summer, it might be worth it just to try out different firms and different types of work.

And I agree with the above poster that if you have the credentials for Wachtell, you won't have much trouble going somewhere else if you hate it that much. Why not give it a try?

No I mean, can a post fellate a firm any more than the above one though? It's just a Biglaw firm. They do great work; they have notorious hours, and pay really, really well. It's still just a firm. We really ought not to encourage the idea that it's a holy grail of any kind. Jesus people, we're talking about work here, not vacation destinations.
