They are doing OCI at my school this early next week but they haven't even sent pre-selects back yet so it looks like they're being fairly slow. I also emailed in my application to be sure.

Heard back, pre-select screener with one attorney from a DOL regional office and one from the HQ in DC.

They sent me a follow e-mail asking for timeline clarifications (I have a full time job) and Vet status within 24 hours of my e-mail.
interesting, so they're definitely looking at them enough to ask questions. mind if i ask when this was? i know the deadline is this sunday but i only submitted this past monday, wondering if I'm at the bottom of a pile now or just not getting a screener.
Sent the email Sep 6, 2016 at 8:23 PM, received a response Sep 7, 2016 at 11:01 AM. I might have just been one of the earlier ones so they had free time on their hands :)
hah yeah possibly, who knows. sorry one last question, what did you mean by timeline clarifications? i'm actually working full time as well, first year out
I have a callback interview with the occ

Any thoughts on advantages/disadvantages of DOL regional vs. headquarters? For QOL I'd prefer regional but not sure if that's a big mistake career-wise.

I think it depends what regional. If you're in one of the California regional offices, then you likely would be able to shift to one of the larger firms in the area (See Littler) if thats your goal.

I thin QOL and COL are both going to be better in a regional office than in DC. You have to remember you start out as a law clerk on the GS scale which is around 60K. Salary increases at the HQ are going to come more often but also you have to deal with higher costs for rent transportation etc. The salary 4 years in at most of the regional offices is a little over $100K from what I have researched plus you can use PAYE, government repayment, your school's loan repayment assistantance grant/plan, and you're doing pretty well. Plus you have steady hours and get plenty of paid holidays.

Heard back after the screener? Or do you mean you heard that you were selected for the screener?

Pre selected for the screener. I was told that the hiring committee for the DOL Honors program would select applications to send to the regional office in December and then the Regional offices would contact candidates for a round of interviews before offers are made.

If you are interviewing for the HQ office, offers will go out in December or the first of the year and there is only one initial interview.

I went through this process with the department of labor last year and am still salty about it.

Graduated top third at a T20. Worked at EEOC for 7 months during law school. Entire resume screamed Labor and Employment, received labor law award at graduation, multiple internships, and public interest. Took SIX Labor and Employment specific courses in law school and got all A's. I really wanted government work for PLSF and more importantly the 40 hour workweek, it was my first choice.

Had a good first round interview and then had a really great second round interview, after which they asked me to rank my preferences. I thought I had it. Three long months later I get a rejection email. Like I said, I'm still really annoyed by this.

I'm joining the Labor and Employment practice group of a V60 next week in a mid size city. Yet I couldn't get this Honors gig. I came away feeling like the process is kind of a crapshoot given the sheer amount of applications they receive. Maybe my attitude is too entitled though. I didn't attend a t14 and did NOT have law review. I was just disappointed and still am.

All hiring is a crapshoot because there's no consistency in interviewers/needs.

You might say something in an interview that will ring the wrong way to your set of interviewers but may have been okay with a different set.

Or maybe the people hired had more preference points.

Or maybe just maybe, you got beat out by someone with better credentials.

I am sorry though that this happened to you. The honors process is cruel, and I truly wish it were different.

Hopefully your gig is great though!

How long was the period between your first round and your second round interview?

Was the first round a phone screener or OCI screener?

Thanks!

As someone who did about 250 applications and couldn't get a single interview for 3 months after graduation, trust me I'm well aware that hiring can be a crapshoot. My second interview with DOL went so ridiculously well, I think I got too excited and figured I had it in the bag. Im happy and fortunate I landed somewhere good. I definitely think I got beat out by someone with better credentials, especially law school and GPA. I have friends with great stats that also failed to get an honors job. These gigs are SUPER competitive!

I'm the poster from above who had the OCI screener. I really wanted the DOL to work out but I'm definitely not top third from a T20 and I don't have as strong a background in L&E like you. I definitely will go ahead and count my interview as a ding now. But thanks for putting this out there!

Is the FTC Bureau of Competition internship we're talking about the 2L summer honors program? I've heard they tend to hire from their summer class, but only for paid internships- as far as I'm aware, it doesn't seem like they have a paid 2L summer program. Does anybody have any insight on this?
