Re: Cravath's Spawn - the Wave of Copycats - RUNNING TALLY
I think there's some pressure. For example, Manatt recently moved to $160k after being below market for a while. I have to think the pressure came from losing candidates to firms paying market and they ultimately decided they needed to up salary in order to attract desirable candidates. I can speak for myself and say they were out of the equation after CBs based on pay alone. I don't think a firm paying $130k will raise it any time soon, and if they do it will be in the typical increments of $145k, $160k, or now $180k.Anonymous User wrote:Obviously this is just conjecture, but do people think lower-tiered big law firms will follow suit in giving a raise in secondary markets? For instance, if my firm pays 130k to new associates, would it have any incentive to raise to 135 or 140 based on what happens with top tier firms?

No differentiation among the markets for PW, either. We're all going to 180, boys.

Re: Cravath's Spawn - the Wave of Copycats - RUNNING TALLY
Will be interesting to see what happens in Austin. We have two major types of biglaw firms that compete for two types of associates: traditional Texas firms (e.g., BB, V&E, NRF) and West Coast-style tech-focused firms (e.g., Wilson, DLA, Pillsbury), all of which pay $160K. Andrews Kurth is the only one I can think of that's big in both. Small but very competitive market. I bet neither group needs to match to get good people to Austin, but if one firm in either group moves first, the rest will have to follow or risk their top associates jumping ship. Not sure how much pressure a match in Houston or Dallas would put on Austin firms, but I'm guessing not a lot.

I bet STB or DPW are crunching numbers to decide whether they will push it to 185k or 190k

Would be awesome. If STB did this it would solidify them as the UNDISPUTED PRESTIGIOUS SALARY LEADERAnonymous User wrote:I bet STB or DPW are crunching numbers to decide whether they will push it to 185k or 190k

Can we add a date for each firm? For the sake of future generations reconstructing the timeline... Would love to know how fast the process was for the last go-around right now.
