Even if you don't like Trump, he just gained the support of a party that was colluding against him without any public donations, and turned his complete lack of experience into a positive. Any business minded person respects that. The fact he may be a crazy racist who will drive us into a nuclear holocaust doesn't make him less of a genius.

Is he a genius or is a good chunk of the republican electorate stupid?

Most disagreements in national politics are a question of values and culture, and big law firms have cosmopolitan and socially liberal cultures. If you think that it is unfair for organizations to maintain their cultures by discouraging certain viewpoints, do you similarly think that it is unfair for countries to maintain their cultures by excluding certain people?

Here's the thing: no firm is going to fire you because of your political views, though a few people in the firm will judge you to be a dick. I didn't hide that I was an atheist libertarian when I went to a christian, socially conservative high school, despite the fact that many people judged me to be a terrible person because of my views. Why don't you similarly man up?

It basically sums up the attitude of the political left about anything with which they disagree. (Disclaimer: I'm part of the political left.)

Serious question from someone who didn't summer at a BigLaw firm but will be starting there next fall:

How often does this stuff actually come up? I've always been of the opinion that a) I go to work to work, and Trump/Hillary/Sanders isn't at all related to securities regulation and b) politics don't make good office discussion.

Is this a thing that comes up often enough to be something I should be worried about?

Not sure why you'll be laughing at anyone for that. It's not like those voting against him would have done anything to bring that upon themselves. Where's the humor, other than the immature "my candidate won and yours lost" which is basically tantamount to "my dad is stronger than your dad!" ?

In my experience, no one is going to force you to join a political conversation. Sure, people talk about politics from time to time, just like they talk about sports, news, weather, etc. But generally you don't have to participate in these conversations if you don't want to.

No, and it's not hard to avoid if it does.

Since a Trump victory looks increasingly likely, I'll ask again: Would your firm fire or otherwise punish someone for speaking favorably about Trump as president? I increasingly find myself in political conversations at the office and it seems unfair that I should have to keep silent while the liberals are given unlimited free political speech in this election.
I was actually thinking about your post earlier this week. When you wrote it I was sure you were a troll. I thought no half intelligent person one would support Trump (and I'm a Republican). So I guess congrats on proving me wrong man.
Even you will be on the Trump Train by November.

You could make it to retirement and never have a conversation about politics at the office. Just don't show an interest in it.

As someone clerking for one of Trump's SCOTUS picks, let me assure you, I have 0 respect for Trump supporters.

But Trump has repeatedly said on the record that he LOVES Mexicans, women, and minorities!

I don't even think it's okay to come out as a Republican in Biglaw, let alone a Trump Republican. I avoid all political conversations except with a few other closeted Republicans. Though it's hard when people always feel the need to chime in about how awful conservatives are while making happy hour chit chat.

I chuckled at the irony of "closeted Republicans."

You know what they say...don't ask, don't tell.

It is definitely not something that engenders any friendliness in law school itself.
