I would not call it no-risk. Someone from my school went to one, got completely sloshed, and insulted a few associates. DO NOT DO THIS

If someone has a problem with this, then they'll have a problem during their firm's first holiday party anyways. For (hopefully) the vast majority of us, it really is (almost virtually) risk-free.

More anecdata: I was invited to join a firm's summer mentorship program after attending their 1L reception. At the end of the mentorship program my 1L year (which was literally just an excuse for me to get coffee with various other attorneys), I was invited back for a screener and then a callback. This firm was typically a top 3 bid at my school and so it was very nice to leave them off my bidlist and use a high priority bid for another firm. And all I did was show up to the 1L reception - I'm not particularly good looking or funny or cured cancer etc.
