Man, I remember when people used to say MVP, I'm amused that Michigan has been kicked out.
But let's be real, Penn folks say CCNP cuz they don't wanna be associated with Virginia proles.

I got a 4.0 at CN, but already took a judicial internship with a COA judge (applied on Dec. 1). Judge said up front he was open to split summers, I said at the time that I didn't want to split, but that is probably still an option if I change my mind.
How open would firms be to 1L splits? Trying to decide if I want to try to pursue a firm job - I think I'm going to enjoy the internship a lot more, but on the other hand $$$

Pretty sure you would also enjoy a few weeks of dining out every day for free and minimal work.Anonymous User wrote:I got a 4.0 at CN, but already took a judicial internship with a COA judge (applied on Dec. 1). Ok fair, so any thoughts on whether firms would be open to splits and how to handle this if applying to them. When do you mention that that's all you're interested in? I have zero connection to the market I have the judicial internship in and already arranged housing there, so I'm pretty limited to that market for potential splits. My instinct is that I should explain why I'm applying in that market in my cover letter, but is that bringing up the split too early?
Also thoughts on when I should talk to the clerk who is running the internship program about this? Before I apply? If I get an offer? Instinct is that if I'm mentioning the internship in firm applications that I need to tell them up front, but don't want to look like a doofus when I don't get anything and then have to tell them that I will be there for the entire summer after all.

I don't think you need to mention it to your internship until there is something to mention. There's still like 4-5 months until you start, so there's still plenty of time to give them notice. Any firms you plan on interviewing with aren't going to contact your prospective internship.
In terms of firms, I wouldn't bring up a split in a cover letter or anything. I would bring it up in a screener or callback if its with a partner. During the interview, just ask if they are open to the idea of splitting. You don't need to say you already plan on doing a judicial internship. I would officially ask if/when you get an offer. They are going to be more likely to say its fine if they've already given you an offer.
I also don't think you need to bring up the internship for to explain why you are applying for that market. If its a large market, they don't really much for ties. If its a smaller market, just make up some reason about how you love the area or mother was originally from that area or something. You are a desirable candidate and except for some particular markets they won't care too much about ties.
I think nalpdirectory and some firm websites may mention how receptive they are to splitting.
