I think living in Encino and saving the cash would be great. Why do you think you would not be able to go out at the end of the day? Wouldn't you drive anyways? And then going home later would be a shorter commute?Anonymous User wrote:Question -- My parents live in Encino and I have a firm job in Downtown. Saving money by not paying rent would be awesome. Are there any reasons why living at home is a bad idea? Commute's not ideal, but I think I can manage. Is it common for partners/associates to want to go out for drinks at the end of the day? As in, would living in the valley be a restraint on my ability to attend social functions?

Saving money is never a bad idea, I bet you can figure out how to live at home and still socialize with coworkers, it's not like they'd be expecting to party at your parent's house and your parents should understand if you come home late after social drinking on occiasion (unless you live in a sober house). You can easily splurge on $20 Ubers back to the valley if you drink more than you can legally and safely drive.

Where's the best place to look for housing? Craigslist? AirBnB? I've tried searching and there don't appear to be too many options. I figure it may be too early. Any particular websites that y'all used?

For summer or permanent? For summer it's too early, but craigslist and airbnb as well as the facebook groups for local law school are best. For permanent most people end up having to use Westside Rentals as they have the majority of inventory, once you find your first place you'll find your second by word of mouth or just walking around areas you like and seeing signs.

this. just uber/lyft around when you plan on drinking heavily and drive to events and then home when its a more casual thing. I think when the commute starts getting more than 45 minutes in traffic in the morning it becomes somewhat intolerable for a whole summer, but 30 min or less living at home would be golden.Anonymous User wrote:Saving money is never a bad idea, I bet you can figure out how to live at home and still socialize with coworkers, it's not like they'd be expecting to party at your parent's house and your parents should understand if you come home late after social drinking on occiasion (unless you live in a sober house). think about it this way. people will be living all over the place and everyone has to deal with the after-work drinking/driving situation from different parts of the city, so you're at no particular disadvantage by being home.

Any thoughts as to how LA firm culture compares to other major cities? Particularly Chicago and DC.

Sort of depends on the firm though
